Total Republican delegates so far:
Goldwater-705 delegates
Bush-555 delegates

Bush decides to drop out of the race.  "Today Americans I've decided to drop out of the race for the Republican nomination in 1984.  I therefore go forward and endorse Senator Barry Goldwater Jr. for the Republican nomination.  Thank you and God Bless America."

Goldwater states "20 years ago my dad helped bring about a movement not seen since much since Robert Taft in the 1940's and early 1950's.   This idea lead to less government intervention and more freedom.  As of tonight, I'm the official Republican nominee in 1984 since Secretary Bush droppped out of the race earlier this evening.  We must go forward now and defeat President Kennedy this fall and bring less government to America.  Thank you Republicans and God Bless America."

President Kennedy states "Senator Goldwater is bad for America.  He's not going to lookout for the middle class or the poor.  All he wants is less government for everything you can imagine.  His father ran for President 20 years ago and lost to Lyndon Johnson.  Anyways, that's why voting for the Democrats is the best choice as we will stand up for your values while Republican's won't.  Former President Reagan came out in support of Goldwater which can only mean one thing if Goldwater's elected: disaster part 2."

Democratic National Convention: July 16th-July 19th

On the third night Vice President Bentsen addresses the Convention saying "Democrats let's go forward with President Kennedy and I in charge.  If we hand power over to Senator Goldwater we'll be in a hell hole.  He wants to get rid of Social Security, Universal Healthcare as well as other social programs in this country.  We don't need that kind of man in the White House.  Therefore this November go with Kennedy and Bentsen.  Thank you and God Bless America."

On the final night President Kennedy addressed the Convention saying "Democrats this is an important election in a long time.  We have a choice between a man who wants to dismantle our government and a man who wants to help the less fortunate.  Thank you and God Bless America."

The Democrats nominate Kennedy/Bentsen.

On July 30th Senator Barry Goldwater Jr. announces his running mate will be Representative Phil Crane of Illinois.  "I feel Phil Crane will be a great Vice President.  He shares my values for America.  I feel that the team of Goldwater and Crane will be better for America than has Kennedy and Bentsen."

Crane states "I'm glad to be selected as Goldwater's running mate.  Senator Goldwater and I will bring America back to less government including less gun control.  Thanks and God Bless America."

Republican National Convention: August 20th-August 23rd

On the third night Representative Phil Crane states "Thank you Republicans.  I'm glad to be on the team this year.  We need less government and under a Goldwater administration we'll have it.  President Kennedy has grown the government over the past 4 years.  Thank you and God Bless America."

On the final night Senator Barry Goldwater Jr. states "Republicans let's go forward and win the Election this fall.  We can't continue to spend and we need to have a budget of a cap on spending.  I propose, if elected, to get a bill through Congress and put a cap on spending.  Thank you and God Bless America."

They nominate Goldwater/Crane.

Presidential Debate: October 23rd, 1984

Rather: Hello Americans and welcome to the Presidential Debate of 1984.  We have with us here President Ted Kennedy and Senator Barry Goldwater Jr.  First question, what are some of your ideas for the next 4 years?  Senator Goldwater?

Goldwater: First I want to thank Dan Rather for moderating and President Kennedy for being here tonight.  My ideas for the next 4 years is less government.  I plan to get rid of the gun control and healthcare laws.  That's not for the government to do.  The government is here to protect you but not cradle you.  President Kennedy has grown the government the largest since the Great Depression.

Kennedy: I too want to thank Dan Rather for moderating and Senator Goldwater for being here.  Now Senator Goldwater said I'd grown the government the largest since the Great Depression and he'd get rid of government involvement.  Let me ask the audience, would you rather have a candidate who looks out for the middle class or a candidate who wants you to live like survival of the fittest?

Rather: Alright 2nd question, what's your idea to deal with the economy?  President Kennedy?

Kennedy: I'd just continue the things I'd been doing: put money into it.  Senator Goldwater won't and will make the economy fail.

Goldwater: As far as the economy goes we need to have lower taxes and less government.

Rather: Last question, let's get to one social issue that's been brought up over the past couple decades: abortion?  Senator Goldwater?

Goldwater: I'm pro-choice.  Like my dad's said "abortion is not a conservative issue."

Kennedy: I'm very pro-choice and have been for as long as the issue was brought forward.

Rather: That's it.  Remember voting is November 6th.

99th Congress:
House: 225 Republicans, 210 Democrats
Senate: 50 Democrats, 49 Republicans, 1 Independent

President Kennedy addresses his supporters "Americans I've tried to do my best over the past 4 years but obviously my strategy didn't work.  I want to congratulate Senator Goldwater on his election and wish him well.  I go tonight as a defeated man but will continue my fight.  Thank you and God Bless America."

Senator Goldwater addresses his supporters "Americans I want to thank everyone for helping us win tonight.  We've got a lot to do ahead and I hope to dismantle the gun control law as well as the healthcare law.  We need a free market society.  Representative Crane and I feel that America didn't want any of this government stuff.  Thanks and God Bless America."

Goldwater will have a Republican majority in the House and barely a Democratic majority in the Senate.  (This includes the Independent Senator Jacob Javits, who caucuses with the Democrats.)

On November 10th, Barry Goldwater resigns from the Senate to "get things together" for when he becomes President.  Therefore the Senate makeup is 56 Democrats, 42 Republicans, 1 Independent and 1 Vacant.

1) I noticed Reagan doesn't win with Ohio either in 1976.

2) Will we see Goldwater's cabinet, or at least the main people (Treasury, State, Defense, AG)?

Thanks for the comments and critiques.  Anyways, Goldwater is thinking about James Baker for Secretary of the Treasury, former Sec. of State in Reagan administration George Bush for Secretary of State, former Congressman Donald Rumsfeld for Secretary of Defense and Edwin Meese III for Attorney General.

On January 3, 1985 the 99th Congress is inaugurated.  The Republicans now have control of the House while the Democrats maintain a slight majority in the Senate.  Speaker Michel states "Americans we've come to represent you in Washington.  The Kennedy administration has taken us on the wrong track and we're here now to put us on the right track.  Therefore in the next few weeks I'll propose we vote to repeal the gun control law and the healthcare overhaul.  Thank you and God Bless America."

On the Senate side Senate Minority Leader Howard Baker (who had decided to run in 1984 unlike RL) stated "The Republicans have 49 seats in the United States Senate and we will filibuster any liberal legislation brought forward by Senate Majority Leader Robert Byrd.  I hope he allows for debate on the gun control issue as well as the healthcare issue too.  Thank you and God Bless America."

I was really hoping for Carter with 2 terms. Can we still get him during the 90's maybe?

Carter?  You mean Kennedy?

In the Senate Vice President sears in all the newly elected Senators.

On January 17th President Kennedy gives his farewell address: "Americans, over the last 4 years we've had many changes.  Some of them were not as popular as others were.  It's been interesting in serving as President of the United States as my brother did 20 some years ago.  Anyways, I'm glad you gave me a chance to serve and hope to serve the public some other way down the road.  Thank you and God Bless America."

On January 20th Barry Goldwater Jr. is sworn in as President of the United States.  "Americans, over the next 4 years I promise to have a government that lets you do what you want with your life compared to the previous administration.  I hope Congress will bring up repeals of the awful healthcare and gun control laws.  We also need to end this taxes that the Democrats passed a few years ago and go to a flat tax.  Having a flat tax is going to be better for the economy.  I hope you all can give me confidence over the next 4 years.  Thank you and God Bless America."

On January 21st Speaker Robert Michel brings up the Anti-Gun Control Act of 1985 and it passes the House 250-185.  All Republicans vote for it as do 25 Democrats.

A few days later it is brought forward in the Senate.  A majority of the Democrats say their going to vote agains it while a few moderate Democrats will vote for it most likely giving it the "green light" to pass.

Former President Ted Kennedy states "If this legislation passes it will be a sad day for America."  Former President Ronald Reagan states "This is the best piece of legislation that I've seen in a long time."  The final Senate vote is 55-45.  6 Democrats vote for it.  The next day President Goldwater signs it and says "This is the best day for America as we get our 2nd Amendment rights back."

The next hurdle for the Republicans is pass legislation that would repeal the healthcare law.  However it may not make it to the President's desk as all 50 Democrats and Independent Senator Jacob Javits state they will vote againt it.
