Maybe Specter will dodge another magic bullet.

Thanks for bringing that up.

Specter is so bizarre that he will come up with explanations that deny the laws of physics to get the result he wants.

Map of the 2004 primary results (Specter in red, Toomey in blue):

Weird pattern in the Philly suburbs and exurbs. Not surprising, just weird.

You can't guess?

In addition, he wouldn't have all that Toomey gear if he thought he was backing a loser.

Well I don't know, I always thought Phil was big on the ideological purity, regardless of end result... in a respectable way, of course. I honestly have no idea if Toomey would have won, I wasn't following that election really, I'm just interested.

I would've thought Specter would've performed poorly in the T against Toomey.

How's it weird? The only particularly weird thing to me is Toomey's strength in the Pittsburgh area.

Roll Eyes

I'm not for "ideological purity." I don't like RINOs that stab this party in the back whenever they like it. Toomey is closer to me (and to the average Republican) and I thought he would have won in a close race in 2004.

...

As I explained, Bush and Santorum were pushing for Specter. Bush made a stop here for Specter just days before the primary. Specter then put out an ad, highlighting the event called "Three for Pennsylvania" which showed highlights of Santorum and Bush praising Specter.

If it wasn't for the endorsement, the trip and that ad just days before voting, those counties would have went hardcore for Toomey. It would have been a comfortable win.

The west (Democrats and Republicans) have never really cared for Specter.

They love them some authentic conservatives regardless of what Bush and Santorum said.  Wink

Lancaster is rather polarized. The Republicans and Democrats are both clearly extreme.

Right but the Dems have nothing to do with this.

How ironic that eventhough the "T" but Santorum's BS Santorums own western base didn't. There hate of Specter beat there love for Rick.

Phil, I remeber hearing a story that the endorsement of Specter was one of the Laundry list of things that hurt SAntroum in 2006. Was there any thruth this? I rember something about there being conservatives who voted for Swann for Governor in the  in the uncontested  primary but not for Santorum also uncontested and they blamed it on the what happened in 2004. Is that accurate Phil?

Yes, that's another interesting angle.

I'll say this much: There are still people within the grassroots movement (not many but still a few) that hold a very serious grudge against Santorum for what he did and didn't care to see him beat in 2006. I don't think it hurt him enough in the General that it made a serious impact on his final vote tally but it doesn't help when the people that used to adore you don't want to get involved and think that you've betrayed them.
