Outside of his being strongly pro-life, Casey was sort of the standard Rust Belt Democrat of the day when it came to labor issues.

The other major hurdle for Casey would probably be his health (Casey had been diagnosed with amyloidosis; a generally rare disease that had already claimed the lives of Pittsburgh Mayor Richard Caliguri and Erie Mayor Louis Tuillo in the preceding years - with Casey ultimately requiring a heart and liver transplant in 1993 {this played a role in Casey not challenging Clinton in 1996}. Additionally, Casey had undergone bypass surgery following a 1987 heart attack)
