I find amusing the willingness of Democrats to throw out the centrist Democrats who occasionally buck the party line and do what is necessary to get elected so shortly after the Arlen Specter episode and the consequences of "purity" politics.

Being in the majority doesn't give you the excuse to suddenly shun the idea of a big-tent party. That sort of arrogance is usually how you lose the majority.

Y'all realize that there are more Republican states than Democratic ones, right?  If both parties only nominated mainstream liberals/conservatives, the GOP would always be in the majority.

No, there would be other factors at play even in that kind of scenario.
