Hard to believe the NDP only holds two of those seats.

My uncle lives in the west end of Dartmouth. (which appears to be hardcore NDP on this map) I wonder if he is a supporter. I'm actually going to stay at his place for the NDP convention in 2 weeks, so maybe I will find out.

Talking of that, is the name change debate is a joke? That is really happening?

Wait, I saw a cartoon about that in the Metro today, but no news story. It left me interested, I will have to read up on that. With out any knowledge, I'd have to say some riding association has probably proposed it, and the media found it.

Ahh neat: http://www.cbc.ca/canada/story/2009/08/04/ndp-name-change233.html

I guess I have to decide on whether or not I will support this. Hmmm....
I always though that sometime in the distant future, the Greens and the Bloc would merge with us, and that "Democratic Party" would be our new name. If we change now, we would lose that bargaining chip.

I have a couple of multi riding requests:

Scarborough

Niagara

I will buy anyone a drink next time they are in Ottawa for taking a crack at these.

Thx,

That northern Brampton riding seems to have an odd population distribution... what's that about (I don't know anything about the area).

The unpopulated area in the south of the riding is Pearson International Airport (i.e. the main Toronto airport). Malton is the separate town on the non-Brampton side of the airport; it now has a large South Asian population.

I'm trying to figure out QuantumGIS, though there may be no point with others able to make maps so quickly and so well. I can look at a whole poll-by-poll map of the whole country, but no poll numbers or riding boundaries. Any tips?

Riding boundaries are in another file. Poll numbers are available through a ''Identify'' function or something with a name like that.

Is Bramalea is on the Brampton map?

Bramalea is the Liberal area on the north part of the map, I believe.

Kenora's a strange place. So NDP friendly provincially, yet federally...  it's bucking the regional trend. I once met a girl from Dryden I think who worked with the Liberal MP before the election, and she swore to me the seat would fall to us. I wasn't so sure.

Wasn't the Liberal candidate in Brandon-Souris the 9/11 conspiracy woman? Would explain why the Liberals collapsed there.

Hey folks...don't know if this is old news or not, but I just noticed this today. Federal polling division boundaries are finally available to us peons through GeoGratis, if you have a GIS program. They go back to 2000.
Would it be possible to make maps of 2006 with that?

If so, I have an odd request. (Actually, I'd be somewhat interested even in 2008. Dull as it will look.) Macleod, Alberta. Myron Wolf Child took 2.1% of the vote riding-wide in 2006 as a Native Nationalist indy... I want to see how he did on the riding's four reserves.

You don't really need a map to find that out.

Not really, but old people do.

Indeed, someone who knows the polling district system better than I do can correct me on this, but my understanding was that your typical high-rise tower doesn't get its own 400-series poll (how else could there be regular block polls in some areas of downtown Toronto, for instance), but only those where there's a specific reason to have people vote in their buildings, such as old folks' homes where people aren't mobile. (But as I say, not sure about this).

I think if one apartment building is a poll, then it will be in the 400s. In Ottawa South, polls 400-402 are a series of 3 condos; polls 403-406 are separate lower class apartment buildings, as are 407 and 408.  Not all single apartment buildings will be in the 400s, as there are some exceptions, I believe, but I can't name any examples.

Glengarry-Prescott-Russell. Russell is so conservative.

Neat. It looks like Hawkesbury is a major hold out. It is a rather french town, as is Casselman. However, Russell Township is pretty French, and it's almost all blue.

3) In some electoral districts with a large increase in voters, they will just renumber each and every poll.

Oh dear, do you know of any cases of this? Maybe in Brampton?

Some examples:

Brampton West
Mississauga Brampton South
Thornhill
Mississauga Erindale
Oak Ridges - Markman
Calgary Nose Hill
Calgary West
Calgary South West
Edmonton Leduc

Why Thornhill or Calgary Southwest? They've only grown 12-13% (2001-2006) while the others you listed are over 20%.

Here is Welland from 2006

Looks so similar to 2008, yet the order of the 3 parties completely changed

2006 it was Lib, NDP, Cons
2008 it was NDP, Cons, Lib

SoFA EarlAW...Are you able to make 2006 maps as easily as 2008? That would form an incredible basis for comparison...

That map I had made a few years ago (hence the copyright on it). I found it in an old thread here, actually.

Hey everyone - I finally am able to post maps and celebrated the event by posting a collection of 2007 provincial election maps. These are all hand-done and will look different than the computer generated maps that you have all seen so far...

Cool! Is that an NDP poll I see in Ottawa West-Nepean? and an NDP poll near St. Laurent? weird!

I guess all we need is Glengarry-Prescott Russell, and then we would have the whole city there Smiley

The Cumberland polls do trend more PC than the rest of the riding but all in all, the riding is much safer Liberal territory provincially than federally.

Maps!

I met someone from Egmont at the NDP convention. He had a thick PEI accent, and was 18. I was surprised such people exist in PEI.

Interestingly, on a provincial level, the whole riding flipped from 7 tories to 7 grits in the 2007 election.

Hello. I'm wondering how you guys made those maps? I'm a map maker myself and if someone can teach me how to do this I can continue with the project for everyone to enjoy.

See the first few posts of this thread of instructions.

I started working on the London North Centre by-election map a while ago, but never finished it. Looks like a lot of the Green support went to the Liberals. Nice to see the NDP do so well in LNC Smiley

I am new to these forums, but I was wondering if anyone knows how to create these maps as they don't seem to work on my computer.  I was able to crunch the poll numbers by municipality however in some parts of Canada, so I could do any municipal maps that anyone would like.

Municipal maps would be really cool too. Unfortunately, I have little patience for that kind of thing.
