In 1923, events seemed to quickly pass by, as the world was in a state of relative peace. The American economy was quickly expanding, as a mix of conservative banking acts and progressive programs moved to the forefront. Little controversy was unraveling overseas; As President Wilson and Prime Minister Curzon were able to convince France to not to disavow previous agreements with the Weimar Republic.

President Wilson in London, England, in a three party talk with France and Britain.

On September 1st, the National Socialist German Worker's Party tried to lead a similar fascist revolution in Germany; but their "Beer Hall Putsch" was quickly stopped in a decisive counterattack. The leader, war veteran Adolf Hitler, was sentenced to five years in prison, although he would be released after ten months. In a simultaneous event, a massive earthquake would happen in Japan, killing over 100,000 civilians. The League of Nations would send aid to Japan. Herbert Hoover and former President Hughes would lead the American relief effort.

In more bad news for Japan, On December 28th, Crown Prince Hirohito was assassinated. President Wilson would send his deepest condolences, and the Royal family of Japan was devastated. The reins of succession would fall to the second son, Yasuhito.

With general prosperity and a happy populace, the Democratic party seemed likely to win another stretch in power, and their first continuous one since 1856. No real issues were in place, although the new Prime Minister of Britain, Ramsay MacDonald, caused quite a stir when he chose to recognize the Soviet Union, which was not attempted in any other major power.

The Democratic Nomination:

The question of whether Wilson should seek a third term was boggling in many minds. It had never before happened with an incumbent President, but the energized president did not care. wilson declared that he would seek a third term, disappointing potential contenders such as William McAdoo and Al Smith. At the Democratic Convention, Joseph T. Robinson was again selected as the Vice President, overlooking Newton Baker and Franklin Roosevelt.

The Republican Nomination:

With Wilson popular, many Republicans such as Herbert Hoover shied away from the nomination. The main contenders were Warren Harding of Ohio, Hiram Johnson of California, Frank Lowden of Illinois, and Calvin Coolidge of Massachusetts. The party's divider, Robert La Follette, reluctantly announced support for Johnson. In a stroke of backdoor politics and pure luck, Johnson was able to overcome his rivals to be nominated on the seventh ballot. Calvin Coolidge was selected to be his running mate, in order to balance the ticket.

The Election of 1924:

Despite Wilson's initial lead, Johnson's attacks on Wilson's internationalism would hurt the President. However, much of Johnson's own party shared those views, and historians credit much of Johnson's attacks as foolish. It quickly became a mudslinging contest, ignoring policy and going to dirty attacks. In the end, The Democrats were able to win easily, as they capitalized on peace, prosperity, and progress.

Electoral Vote:

Wilson/Robinson: 334
Johnson/Coolidge: 197

Popular Vote:

Wilson/Robinson: 52.7%
Johnson/Coolidge: 45.1%

1924 Congressional Elections:

Despite Wilson's popularity, his victory produced little coattails for his colleagues to follow. The Democrats would maintain their large majority in the Senate, but would lose their footing in the House.

Senate Results:

Democrats: 56 (+1)
Republicans: 40 (-1)

House Results:

Democrats: 229 (-3)
Republicans: 206: (+3)

What is the unemployment rate and inflation rate in 1924, as well as the interest rates that year? Also, what is Wilson's approval rating at the time of his reelection? I'm guessing around 55-60%.

"Raises glass" Here's to an unfinished Wilson Third Term!!!lol...Keep it comming Nik

I'm suspect that anyone, who replaces Woody would suffer OTL Hoover's fate.

It would be interesting to see if the crash still occurs in 1929 or in 1928, before the election.

Good to hear! Smiley

What's the unemployment rate at the end of 1924, and is Wilson still in good health, or is the presidency beginning to take a toll on him?

I previously asked NiK about the unemployment rate in 1924 and he said it was about 4%. About Wilson's health, I'm not sure, so NiK can answer that.

The Third Term of Woodrow Wilson

"If I had to sum up goals of our administration, it is to expand the prosperity to the lower classes, extend the benefits of our great republic, and contract the disorderliness of the bourgeois." On March 4th, 1925, Woodrow Wilson became the first president in history to serve a third term. Encouraged by his large margin, Wilson revealed plans for his new Administration. As the new Senate convened, Wilson announced a huge, comprehensive overhaul of political affairs, his program being labeled "The New Freedom". Included would be establishment of an old age pensions system, an advancement in farm relief, and rigorous prosecution of trusts.

In April, most of his plans were brought up into the Senate. The Pensions system, nicknamed "Old Security," had divided the Senate. Senator Henry Ford of Michigan (D), would remark: "I fail to see why our seniors need a nanny!." Debate would continue, but much to the disappointment of Wilson, it would fail. However, his grand scheme for farmer relief would pass, which would establish the Agriculture Adjustment Administration, would pass. The new plan would give farmers reparations for destroying their crops, in an effort to raise prices. Furthermore, it made government loans available to farmers in need of help. President Wilson would state "The rich are getting richer, but the poor are getting poorer. If that is progress, then I have failed".

Senator Henry Ford of Michigan, a Lion of the Senate.

On July 28th, Wilson would embark on a tour of Europe to meet with various leaders. He became the first President to visit Germany while in office, praising the people for their remarkable recovery from the Great War. He would move southward, becoming the first US President to visit the Pope. His visit caused quite a stir; He came just as Il Duce was announcing his assumption of dictatorial powers. Widely reported and historically proven, was a meeting between Mussolini and Wilson. The infamous meeting, or the "Civitavecchia affair", turned into a multilingual shouting match, as both leaders argued over ideology and their visions, from the corporation state and worker's rights, to colonialism and non-interventionism. At this point, Italian-American relations cooled, and the leaders became remarkably hostile.

Returning to the United States in September, Wilson sat down in his office to pose for a portrait. Wondering whether this one would actually be worthwhile, he touched his hand to the back of his head. Exclaiming "I have a terrific headache", he collapsed on his desk. Two hours later, President Woodrow Wilson was dead.

And so be it, Woodrow Wilson falls to the mysterious and unpredictable Twenty Year Course, and now I predict a return to good old Southern "Bourbon Democraticness"(eeck) as President Robinson will serve out the remainer of Wilson's third unfinished term but be dumped come Convention time due to the inelectability of a Southerner at the time. My perdiction that we will see a President Henry Ford of Michigan being sworn into office come March 4th 1929...Keep it comming nik

The First Term of Joseph T. Robinson

"In the scope of this tragedy, we will endure. In the face of this end, we will continue. In the midst of crisis, we will rebuild." On September 21st, Joseph T. Robinson became the 31st President of the United States, upon the death of Woodrow Wilson. The incoming president was, unmistakably, a brawler. A headstrong individual, he struck down a guard at a convention when he did not recognize him. As a Senator, Robinson was known to bang his fists on the desk to get his point across. Politicians on the Hill quickly quaked at the new President's presence, showing nothing but the utmost respect.

The new president quickly dispatched letters to world leaders, assuring them that the United States will continue on with the League, and recommending a new assembly to be convened of individual ambassadors convening based on population size. A radical idea, it was quickly spurned by the member states. President Robinson expected this much, but he wanted to unleash the idealism of Wilsonianism, and increase the power of the league. It was more of a play for influence then it was an actual policy proposal, he remarked to his confidants.

As January crept up on the nation, President Robinson, in light of economic prosperity, would incorporate a mix of tax cuts for all classes and infrastructure programs to "help further economic expansion" in the country. More conservative politicians met his new policy with intense fervor, while progressives were a bit more skeptical of its implications, feeling that the tax cuts would increase instability in the nation's treasury. Nevertheless, it soared through the congress, and provided relief to common and wealthy men alike.

In the Summer, new trouble in the League of Nations would enter the arena. Internal weakness was beginning to show in the structure, as Spain and Brazil both left the organization. The organization had evolved into a global institution to help promote collective security, but recently it had become a form of anti-communist resistance. "The Soviet Union is a nation of absolute brutality" wrote Former President Hughes, a key proponent of the League. While this impass would be surmounted, the blow was clear.

1926 Congressional Elections:

With prosperity at home and peace abroad, the Democratic Party looked solid for the midterm elections. With the Republican party effectively having no real arguments for control outside of personal insults, the Democrats would maintain their majorities in both Houses of Congress.

Senate Results:

Democrats: 54 (-2)
Republicans: 42 (+2)

House Results:

Democrats: 242 (+13)
Republicans: 193 (-13)

Nice update. I think Robinson's Presidency has been pretty good so far. I wonder when the stock market crash is going to occur. I think it will occur due to the Fed maintaining low interest rates this long. Still, I was a little disappointed that you did not write much about what Hughes has been doing these last five years (1921-1926) like you promised you would. Well, other than that, keep up the good work.
