June 10th, 1993: Do you approve of George Bush’s performance as president?

64% Yes
28% No

President Bush’s numbers looked good, after the inevitable fall from his sky high number of 92%. His economic numbers weren’t looking too good however, at 51%-47%, but his foreign policy numbers were looking excellent at 89%-5%.

June 21st, 1993: The coalition in Afghanistan is settling down for a conflict that all soldiers have to be on their toes for: a guerilla war. The Taliban leader, Mohammed Omar was directing his strikes throughout the country, and soldiers everywhere were on alert. Osama Bin Laden releases a tape of himself announcing a jihad on the west.

July 4th, 1993: Khalid Sheikh Mohammed is executed, sending shockwaves of morale and fear through Islamic militants. Some want to avenge his death, some want are scared of the consequences they face if captured.

July 22nd, 1993: A dismal jobs report in the United States shows unemployment is at 8.3%. And furthermore, the Bush Administration’s big pump in military spending has almost completely changed the projection earlier in the year that the deficit would be gone by 1998. Instead, it would only be a little less in 1998 if the spending is to continue.

August 13th, 1993:
President Bush makes a state visit to Russia, to talk about the crisis in the Middle East. Afghanistan is not there only problem, Israel and the PLO have been at odds, as well.

Been trying to spice it up here, but its hard to write during non-election years. The next update will cover the Virginia and New Jersey gubernatorial elections, as well as more economic and foreign policy news.

Sorry for adressing once again Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, but I don't think this would scare terrotist. Please remember how many of the would welcome such opportunity to being a "mathyrs".

By the way, what was a method of execution?

The method of execution was somewhat humane, lethal injection. Some argued for a gas chamber, but they were shot down as "being no better then nazis."

It scared some of the people that they were trying to recruit, not the veterans.

April 13th, 1993: The CIA is able to connect the organization of Al Qaeda, to Osama Bin Laden, a Saudi millionaire. Secretary Haig presents this evidence to the United Nations, who respond declare him an international criminal. Osama Bin Laden, knowing this fled for his life. He fled to Afghanistan, seeking refuge among the Taliban....

The Taliban didn't capture Kabul until the fall of 1996 and, according to Wikipedia (anyone can edit it, I know) didn't form until September 1994, although the Wikipedia article Civil war in Afghanistan (1992–1996) mentions August 1994 as when the Taliban movement first emergered.  You might want to have bin Laden go somewhere else, or stay in Sudan where he was in OTL from 1992 to May 1996, when he went to Afghanistan, perhaps going to Afganistan later if the Taliban establish control there, although since he did go to Afghanistan in OTL before the Taliban captured Kabul (and to Jalalibad, which seemed to be in Massoud's general section of the country) him going there slightly earlier might work.  But 1993 seems too early to me, and I doubt the "government" in 1993 (Massoud's party) would support him, so just using them in place of the Taliban as our opponents besides Al Qaeda wouldn't work.  So you may want to basically do the last two installments of your timeline over.

August 27th, 1993: A car bomb in Afghanistan kills 47 people. Although the Taliban has been scattered, most of its leaders have not been found. The “Coalition of the Willing” is working with Burhanuddin Rabbani in creating a new, more democratic government.

September 19th, 1993: More dismal economic news is out, the deficit is not changing and President Bush is taking some heat for it. He promises that they will find a way to curb the deficit and create jobs. Democrats are pushing for a large number of infrastructure projects and more government spending. Republicans argue that that will only increase the size of the deficit.

October 5th, 1993: In Afghanistan, Taliban leader Mohammed Omar barely evades capture by a Russian force. His escape is met with disappointment across the world.

October 17th, 1993: Who do you support for the Democratic nomination in 1996?

26% Mario Cuomo
21% Al Gore
14% Dick Gephardt
  9% Joseph Biden
  7% John Kerry
23% Unsure

The first poll for the democratic nomination for president in 1996 is released, showing New York Governor Mario Cuomo at the head of the pack, followed by former VP nominee Al Gore. Although polls this early usually mean nothing, it is good to see America’s opinion.

November 2nd, 1993: Strengthened by poor economic news, Mary Sue Terry is elected Governor of Virginia, defeating republican George Allen. James Florio was easily re-elected Governor of New Jersey, defeating Christine Todd Whitman. David Dinkins, buoyed by his sharp response to 2/23, defeats Rudy Giuliani to win re-election as Mayor of New York City

Update will come tommorow.

And BTW, the Taliban in my timeline persuaded a lot of the military to assist them in "repelling the invaders" that is why they held Kabul. Osama Bin Laden was in the Sudan, but fled to the mountains in Afghanistan. If you don't like my timeline, you don't have to read it.

November 17th, 1993: Do you approve of George Bush’s performance as President?

54% Yes
41% No

George Bush’s popularity has fallen to due his ability to fix the deficit, in a theoretical match-up between Dan Quayle and a generic democrat in 1996, Quayle would lose 51%-41%.

December 9th, 1993: Blazoned by democratic victories in the gubernatorial races, the Democrats heat up their opposition to President Bush’s economic plan. Speaker Foley calls for a cut in military spending and a small tax hike on the wealthy. Unemployment falls down to 7.9%, although the deficit rises.

December 23rd, 1993: As a bit of a Christmas delight for President Bush, three Taliban officials have been captured. But as a bit of coal comes for the president as well; The invasion of Afghanistan has also united most of the mujahideen factions under the Taliban’s control. The reclusive Al Qaeda is said to be in the mountains, expanding its influence and followers.

January 1st, 1994 – The North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) is established. Many democrats are furious with it, saying it will hurt American workers.

January 4th, 1994:
As the 1994 midterm elections get underway, there are many issues, the most important being the Deficit and the War on Terror. Many republicans have turned the War on Terror into a campaign talking point, much to the dismay of President Bush, who feared this would divide his support for his overseas contingencies.

A major update will come tommorow, spaning from January 1994 to the midterm elections.

Is Bush going to use the crisis in Afghanistan to reach out to Iran. That was number 1 on the agenda for a second term, and Baker had been privately trying to arrange a summit with Rafsanjani for the summer of 1993.

We'll see on that, Iranian relations broke down after he lumped them into his "axis of evil," but some people want to extend the olive branch.

January 31st, 1994: It seems that unemployment rates are declining, at 7.7%. May economist cannot describe why it has been so frantic, although many trace it to the spending cuts earlier this year, taking away American jobs in the process.

February 8th, 1994: In polls among the American public, the Democrats have a clear advantage over the Republicans. But, the republicans have a few rising stars running for office. In Texas and Florida, the Bush Brothers (George W. and Jeb) are running considerably ahead of their democratic foes.

February 23rd, 1994: A memorial is dedicated to those who perished in the 2/23 disaster. Secretary General Di Tella unveils his plan for a great, hundred story structure that will last through the ages.

March 16th, 1994: A roadside bomb kills 58 people in Kabul. The war in Afghanistan is turning into one of the worst conflicts in history, with more lives lost then the first three years of Vietnam.

Sorry I couldn't get more done, The next update may come tommorow, but I'm not sure I'll have the time to write it. But, expect the next update to go all the way to January 1995.

Jeb anyway comes very, very close to unseat Chiles, but I doubt George would beat Richards without being aiding by GOP landslide. IOTL he was behind in polls for a long time,

April 2nd, 1994: The deficit continues to sour, forcing President Bush to comply with some democratic demands. He pushes a bill in congress that will put a modest tax increase on people making more than eighty thousand dollars. The Republican leadership is furious, but the bill passes.

May 6th, 1994: A plan for a new, more democratic government is unveiled in Kabul. Many are impressed. The system is almost entirely based off the German system, with a President and a Prime Minister.

June 3rd, 1994: Democrats have the lead on the congressional ballot, 41-35. Members of the GOP are worrying about how many losses they will get in congress.

June 29th, 1994: President Bush and Boris Yeltsin sign the Kremlin accords, after long negotiations, which stop the preprogrammed aiming of nuclear missiles toward each country's targets, and also provide for the dismantling of the nuclear arsenal in Ukraine.

July 17th, 1994:
President Bush goes on vacation to Camp David. He has had a stressful tenure so far, and his approval is dropping.

July 25th, 1994:
Israel and Jordan have a failed meeting which had the purpose of trying to end the state of war between the two countries.

August 22nd, 1994: In a strange twist, the number of deaths and terrorist attacks actually go down in Afghanistan, showing a good sign for the future. The United States begin the training of Afghani troops that will continue the fight with the Taliban and Al Qaeda.

September 10th, 1994: The United States stops a group of Islamic terrorists at the Boston airport, who had a plan to crash their plane into the Empire State Building. They are members of Al Qaeda, who after much interrogation, confirm that Al Qaeda are hiding in the mountains in Kandahar region of Afghanistan.

Next update: 1994 elections. Will come later tonight.
