Let's say the internet became big in the late 1970's/early 1980's, about 20 years before it actually did. Ron Paul gets a huge fanbase on the internet and decides to run for the Republican Nomination. He does as well as he did in 2008, but this time he decides to run on the Libertarian Party's ticket.

How many votes would he have got in the general election aganist Dukakis and Bush Snr?

Dukakis would be destroyed, largely because of his political gaffes, especially the tank video. The Republicans would likely be the first to use the internet for fundraising in this case as well.

Paul, even with the internet, would not push past four percent, the reason being that he is a third party canidate. Though many people probably do support him, they fear that he is not going to win, and therefore vote for the lesser of two evils.

If you asked this in the case of Perot, however, he would have easily trumped both Bush and Clinton by a wide margin.
