The US and Aussie govts disagree.  Dentists disagree.  Unless you got something a little more substantial than about.com, the 83% of us in agreement will stay that way.

From your cites it seems the most "dangerous" thing is some mild discoloration of teeth in very young people.  Until more negative evidence comes in I'll take the 1.4 fewer cavities on average in places with fluoridated water vs non-fluoridated water.

Do they not have toothpaste and toothbrushes where you are?

It can be more than "mild" discoloration.

One think I would look at is the use of fluoride in the community as a supplement.  If there is widespread use as a supplement, I'd vote against it.

There is, of course, the question of cost.

Interestingly the election before we passed it in 1964, flouridation failed just barely. Meanwhile showing movies on Sunday passed with 60% of the vote! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ottawa_municipal_election,_1962

So, why is Waterloo Region 46 years behind Ottawa?

In the City of Waterloo, which has repeatedly been proclaimed the most intelligent city in Canada, 41.16% of citizens have come out to vote, which is a large jump from 27% in the last election.

The result on fluoride is NO: 13363, YES: 13216.

And I contributed to the winning side. Wink

I'd vote against it because it's unnecessary.

Toothpaste has flouride in it already, why do we need to dose up so much on it?

1.4 extra cavities per person...I don't know how many people are in his area, but even it's a few thousand....it's still a lot of teeth.

I've grown up with well water that was softened, and have always preferred that.  I don't like the taste of fluoridated water... but I understand the need for it.

Perhaps you can just start buying the regurgitated tap water the bottled water companies take from cities across America and sell at a 1000% profit!

I remember when I lived on the Reservation the school had to periodically give us little cups of fluoride to swish around in our mouths for about 3 minutes because the water was so poorly fluoridated and apparently not up to state standards. So I always figured just do it properly to prevent that sort of thing.

Against. I opposed forced medication of people, especially that which punishes people who take better care of their teeth.

Rinsing with flouride is a normal procedure in many dentists' office, regardless of whether the drinking water supply has been contaminated in the area.
