So were 20 years in after the wave.  Pretty impressive. In fact, it appeared that though this crises nearly destroyed the US, it sent America's competitors into either wars with eachother or into Civil War....and gave the US a chance to reassert its sovereignty against large estates and to avert climate change.  Basically, in the year 2200, historians would have guessed that but for the wave, the US would be in the fight for its life by mid-century, but instead appeared to have quietly shored up its territorial integrity by fully annexing Puerto Rico and Canada, stopped the privatization of its polity, created a reliable healthcare infrastructure, proved the universiality of its justice systen, fought climate change, diversified its energy technology and delivery portfolio and had many of its national security problems implode on themselves.

A generation after the wave, it appeared America had a second chance in a reset world.

I think thats a positive reflection of the TL? haha. I would like to think that something good comes out of something bad --and this TL definitely has both good and bad aspects of policy making and people's actions...its getting a little harder to write now. I should not have gone to the "September xYear" format and stayed in the longform "Year" format instead which is easier to write in.

I would like to think that I gave you a new way forward and a theme to your TL- does America make good on its second chance or did the wave simply give the US a few decades until the inevitable occurs. Many wealthy individuals simply say "redistribute all of the wealth or Earth and in 10 years, the same people will have the same wealth as before".  Then again, maybe people will have the chance to learn from their mistakes. It would be interesting to see a TL with some future tech and perhaps some sort of cultural or scientific black swan. Perhaps computing  without machines, some form of exotic AI, the discovery of biology outside of planet Earth or maybe the development of a large, armed and global social democratic insurgency.

2033

Following the devastating loss for the American Party, two elections in a row, and the splintering of their own party, the leaders of the AP try to regroup and prioritize what their platform will be going forward.

President Gavin Newsom is sworn in in one of the first lavish inaugurations since President Obama. Unemployment sits at 13% on the day of his inauguration and inflation at 15%. After the confirmation of President Newsom's cabinet he pledges to serve out his entire term saying "since the catastrophe, including President Obama and myself, we have had 10 Presidents each serving on average a little bit over 2 years. Before the tsunami, this average was 5 years. This kind of change in leadership is not good for the country and I pledge that I will serve all four years of my term."

The most important issue to Americans is inflation --what they're earning isn't enough to sustain themselves. Most Americans think the middle class is rebounding but statistics show that there are less "super rich" people in the United States than at earlier times in history.

President Newsom says that he will pursue the formation of a Common Market with Mexico and some Central American countries in the coming years. He states that Central America must show its commitment to Democracy before any agreement can be put on the table. The Patriot Caucus in Congress in early 2031 will pledge millions of dollars in foreign aid to Mexico and Costa Rica to support democracy.

Congress, under the leadership of President Newsom, passes regulations on what type of building materials can or cannot be used in the new state and requires states to set up more extensive regulations in order to build with the most technologically advanced equipment.

Congress proposes a constitutional amendment giving the President the power of line item veto which can be overruled by both houses of Congress with a simple majority. The measure passes both Houses and goes onto the States for ratification. It must be ratified by 45 states.

President Newsom remains popular throughout his first year in office with an average approval of 67%, a low of 58% and a high of 80% when  he first took office. Newsom is also the first President to travel to a foreign country since President Obama in 2011.

Status of the world circa 2031:

Democracy Index

Dark Green/Light Green = Full Democracy (darker Green is more democratic)
Yellow/Orange = Hybrid regime, orange is more authoritarian, yellow is more democratic
Red/Dark Red = Authoritarian regime, the lighter red is less authoritarian, darker red is more...
Purple = Occupied territory

Democratic improvements are largely in Africa and the Middle East, while eastern Europe becomes more authoritarian.

Russia has split up into 3+ entities, while "Russia" the most western part of the former Russian Federation occupies Ukraine/Belarus. Estonia/Latvia/Lithuania are semi-occupied by Russia.

Afghanistan is occupied by India and Iran who are at war with each other. Pakistan is still occupied by India.

Andalusia and Basque Country split off of Spain. Sicily and Milano split off of Italy.

What about the three Italian states are named Lazio, Lombardy and Siciliy...and the Spanish Republics are named Basquia and Avalusia?

...and it appears that the United States is now the largest country, by area, in the world.

..and the new Russian states can be named
Siberia; capital- Vladivostok  and Tartary; capital- Omsk.

My ongoing project continues, even though I'm unsure how many people actually read it. I enjoy making it so whatever Smiley Although I am disappointed with myself over the Reynolds/Schock presidencies, then again --so were the American people...

2034

In the second quarter of 2032 enough states ratify the 28th Amendment to the United States Constitution to make it, well, the 28th Amendment. This amendment gives the President the power of the line item veto --which can be overridden by a majority in Congress unlike other Presidential vetoes.

The American Party is struggling to gain back the loyalty of the now growing Progressive Party who call for more spending in the areas of science and technology saying that The Catastrophe took us back years and years.

In Switzerland, scientists figure out how to control nuclear fusion and harness its energy...the largest breakthrough in science in human history...American scientists will try to replicate their results in the United States.

Unemployment continues to drop in the Newsom Administration and the Patriots Party and the Progressive Party are often on the same side of issues rather than against each other. The leaders of the American Party have become bitter as the Progressives for leaving them. Although enrollment in the American Party still remains the largest political party in the United States, pundits believe that these voters will not stay with the party, even though technically members...

In South America, Brazil and Argentina enter into a common market, which has been unheard of in South America. The intergovernmental body formed as a result of this agreement says that if all goes well, they would be interested in admitting more members. Uruguay, Paraguay, Bolivia and Chile immediately express interest in joining.

In the third quarter of 2032, the Cuban government falls due to internal conflicts within the governing party. President Newsom sends naval units to protect American interests in the Caribbean during this crisis including the State of Puerto Rico.  The President says that "both sides of this conflict in Cuba, are not friends to democracy or the United States" in a press conference on why he would not intervene directly.

President Newsom ends the year with high approval ratings around 55% and unemployment at 8% in the United States, the lowest since 2008. Inflation is still high and has plateaued at 16%.  During the midterm elections, Newsom manages to break the trend and holds onto his own parties seats in Congress mostly due to all the attention being on the incompetent American Party leadership.

2035

President Newsom, in the first quarter of 2035, announces that he will seek a second term as President. Vice President Kyou will remain on the ticket. So far, President Newsom has line-item vetoed over 2,000 lines of text and only 5 have been overridden.

Former President Schock makes some positive news, besides going to federal prison, when a team he commissioned to work on alternate energy sources for cars finds a functional alternate to oil that can be easily mass produced. The Department of Energy is looking into how they can implement this quickly with public and private companies and utilities.

Naval activity in the Caribbean continues with the United States armada protecting several islands including the Bahamas, who has a protection agreement with the US as do many former British isles, and Jamaica.

Unemployment is still decreasing, now around 7.5% and inflation still at 15%. President Newsom is picking up criticsm for not doing enough about inflation --with many Americans working long hours, the average workday is at 9 to 10 hours depending on what state you're looking at.

Scientists in the US, in November 2035, are able to recreate the fusion-related experiment that was successful in Switzerland.

At the end of 2035, American Party Senator, and faction leader, Linus Pascal of Michigan announces that he will run for President under the American Party saying he will "bring dignity back to our party after the disgraceful Presidencies of Aaron Schock and Lisa Madigan."

Governor Noele Ashton of North Carolina announces that she will seek the Presidency under the Progressive Party line as does Dezi Zachary, a former American Party Senator, and current Governor of Oklahoma and Carl Miquel a Progressive Senator from Florida with close ties to former nominee Rudolf Julian. Ashton and Miquel have vowed to drop out of the race if Julian wants the nomination.

2036

At the beginning of 2036 President Newsom rides the now completed Atlantic Corridor High Speed Train that runs from Florida to Maine in 4 hours reaching speeds up to 400miles per hour. President Newsom's approval ratings are at 58%

The election cycle begins with old school primaries in the Progressive Party with Zachary, Miquel and Ashton facing off in debates and early contests. The American Party nomination is contested by several candidates but Senator Pascal easily defeats his "also ran" opponents.

At the end of the Progressive Party's primary Carl Miquel is the nominee. Senator Miquel selects Progressive (and former American Party Congressman) Governor Jared Polis of Colorado.  American Party nominee Linus Pascal selects another party elder, Frederick Hannity of North Dakota.

April 2036 Polling:

Newsom/Kyou - 53%
Miquel/Polis - 35%
Pascal/Hannity -  10%
Undecided - 2%

Quote
You must be logged in to read this quote.

Rubio - Dead
Haley - Dead
Paul - Dead
DeMint - Dead
(They all died in the Tsunami...)

Pence - Elected Governor, didn't seek higher office due to dealing w/ the refugees
Jindal - Didn't seek higher office due to dealing w/ the refugees
Kokesh - Doing whatever it is he does, in the Marines? Has a family and a nice ranch outside of Santa Fe?
Nunes - Somewhere in California? Perhaps?
Walorski - Somewhere in Indiana?

Both political parties, the American Party and Patriots Party have conservatives...its mainly economic policy that seperates the two. At first, there was no difference really, besides being different factions --up until recently in the timeline the American Party was more liberal in its economic policy while the Patriot Party was more conservative. President Newsom is a more liberal economic policy guy in the Patriot Party. With the downfall of the American Party, we'll see many of their "conservatives" go over into the Patriot Party, however; many social issues had fallen to the wayside as America recovered....

The Tea Party faction ceased to exist after the tsunami --just like the Republican and Democratic parties.

2037

President  Gavin Newsom of California and Vice President Primula Kyou are sworn in for their second term.

President Newsom appoints the first female Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, Gisa Corina, who is sworn in after being approved 98-20 in the Senate. Corina had previously been Solicitor General under the Reynolds Administration.

Newsom announces a large spending plan during his inaugural address that he says will put the United States on other worlds and will order NASA to spend humans to Mars.

In the first quarter of the year, Newsom's approval rating is 67% and inflation has dropped to 14% --which is Americans #1 concern according to poll. Congress approves of plans to centralize the United States capital in Denver, Colorado. The Supreme Court and Congress will be moving within the next year. Denver had already been equipped with advanced military technology capable of stopping attacks. What remains of Washington DC will, still, be made into a historical site.

In South America, Chile and Uruguay join the South American Common Market with Brazil and Argentina. Venezuela calls the market a "threat to Venezuelan security." Ecuador, Peru, Paraguay and Bolivia have all expressed interest in joining.

Egypt, Turkey, Jordan and Iraq have become more democratic over the past 5 years but central Asia has become more totalitarian. Iran and India are butting heads in the region as India continues to occupy Pakistan.

In East Asia, Taiwan declares its independence formally with little more than a verbal trantrum from China who's government is in disarray as opposition to the regime grows stronger.

Back in Africa, countries bordering the democratic South Africa become more democratic while central Africa and north-central Africa become more totalitarian...

President Newsom's popularity at the end of 2037 is around 57% and inflation at 13%.

2038

The Progressive Party goes on the offensive against President Newsom --helping kindle bickering within his own party. The conservatives in the Patriots Party had reluctantly tagged along with Newsom's agenda, which has been heavily reliant on spending, and are now demanding less spending and tax cuts to foster continued economic development. Members of Congress in the Patriots Party are facing challenges from more fiscally conservative candidates.

President Newsom chooses to send American troops to support the democratic side of a civil war in Honduras after the military ousted an authoritarian leader claiming to have the support of "the people." The American public is confused about if American forces are truly helping the democratic side in the civil war, and Newsom's approval drops below 50% for the first time in his Presidency -- 48% approving of his job as President.

After several weeks of American forces on the ground --and roughly about 100 American deaths--Newsom pulls the forces out after members of his own party threatened to use the War Powers Act against him. Newsom's approval upon withdrawal is 44%.

Midterm Elections 2038

Senate (118 Seats - 60 for majority):

Patriot Party: 52 (-6)
Progressive: 60 (+7)
Independent: 6 (-1)

House of Representatives (539 Seats - 270 for majority ):

Patriot Party:  277 (-27)
Progressive Party:  249 (+44)
Independent:  13 (-17)

Progressives pick up seats in both houses and win the majority in the Senate for the first time.

2039

President Newsom's approvals rebound slightly around the State of the Union and due to success in beginning to implement democratic elections in Honduras. His approvals rise to 49%. Inflation is down to 12%.

Newsom also apologizes during the State of the Union for not clearly communicating the goals and purpose of being in Honduras --and says that he alone is to blame. Many members of his own party, and the opposition, say its too late for apologizes.

2039 continued

Still in the first quarter of 2039, President Newsom travels to South America to promote the common market and to lobby Brazil and Argentina to allow Colombia and Costa Rica to join the economic zone. Venezuela saber rattles at the notion of an alliance forming around them but the despot government is too concerned over its own internal affairs to commit to aggression.

In the Middle East, history is in the making. Egypt, Israel, Turkey, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Bahrain, Iraq, UAE, Kuwait and what is to become the Palestinian nation agree to peace. Israel will give the Palestinian nation the Gaza strip and a designated amount of land connecting the strip to the Sinai Peninsula in Egypt. Egypt will be giving up territory on the Peninsula for the Palestinian nation. Both Israel and Egypt will reimburse their own citizens that are effected by the treaty.

Part of the treaty also allows the Kurds in Turkey and Iraq to form their own state. Iran is not part of the treaty which in history will be known as the Treaty of Istanbul.

Central Asia and India is the most violent area in the world right now with India trying hard to set up effective regional governments in Pakistan. A full war rages on between India and Iran who has other despots in Central Asia as its allies. The countries signing the Treaty of Istanbul have refused to get involved in the Iran-Indian War.

Elections commence without major problems in Hondouras. Costa Rica calls it "good news for Latin America"

Newsom's approval goes up again as he addresses Congress from its new home in Denver, a bit behind schedule. Inflation is down to 10%, Newsom's approval is 51% and America's GDP grew by a record 7% in the second quarter of 2039.

By the end of the year, Colombia and Costa Rica have been put officially on the path to join the South American Common Market.

2040

Vice President Primula Kyou of New York announces that she will seek the Patriots Party nomination for the Presidency. President Newsom endorses her immediately but a conservative Patriots Party Senator from West Virginia Maximilian Peleg announces that he will challenge Kyou for the nomination.

In the Progressive Party, Senator Rudolf Julian of New Mexico, the founder of the Progressive Party, announces that he will seek the nomination again. Julian had run in 2032 and lost to now President Newsom but had defeated the American Party candidate. It is unlikely that Julian will face opposition for the nomination.

Early 2040:

Kyou: 48%
Julian: 43%
Undecided: 9%

What party do you affiliate yourself with, if any?

Patriots Party: 38%
Independent: 30%
Progressive Party: 25%
American Party: 7%

If President Newsom was able to run for a third term would you vote for him?

Yes: 57%
No: 38%
Not sure: 5%

Can you give descriptions of the party?

Yeah, I've been avoiding fully doing that. I'll do it issue by issue, how does that sound? Feel free to suggest issues I should cover.

I'll do a few issues at a time...I'll add more soon.

Abortion:

American Party

Uphold status quo.

Progressive Party

Pro-Choice - Primary goal should be reducing the number of abortions but government should not restrict access to them. Many members are against the need for parental consent for 17 year olds and older but the issue of consent is not the party's platform.

Patriots Party

Also agrees that the primary goal should be reducing the number of people who need abortions but supports restrictions on abortion and strong parental consent laws. President Newsom is in line with the party platform on this issue.

Death Penalty

American Party

Before the fall of the American Party, its national platform did not have a clear position of the death penalty besides that it should be used less often.

Progressive Party

Opposed to the death penalty.

Patriots Party

In favor of the death penalty in violent crimes only or in extraordinary circumstances.  President Newsom has expressed "uneasyness" with the death penalty and no one has been executed by the Federal government under his watch.

Gun Control

American Party

See Patriots Party.

Progressive Party

Supports centralization of background checks when buying a gun or ammunition for guns. Does not support the sale of semi-automatic weapons or automatic weapons. Claims that current gun laws in the eastern states encourages vigilantes and that more money needs to be appropriate to police forces in the Eastern and (former) Refugee States.

Patriots Party

After the Tsunami, both major parties eased up on their positions on gun control due to crime in the "Refugee States" and in the "eastern states." Still to this day, gun control laws are lax in the Eastern States and Refugees states while tighter on the West Coast -- excluding in Colorado, where President Hagel was assassinated.

The Patriots Party is not in favor of centralization of background checks by the government, saying it gives too much power to regulate guns to the government and call the idea "authoritarian." Strongly support second amendment rights with less regulation. Generally more accepting of the sale of semi-automatics and opposed to the sale of automatic weapons.

Health Care

American Party

American Party President Kamala Harris passed socialized medicine in the United States during her term in office. This is the cornerstone of the now dead American Party's platform. The American Party was in favor of keeping the "American Universal Health Coverage Act" the way it is with only making reforms to it when needed. The most recent American Party President Aaron Schock passed substantial cost reducing legislation.

Against medical malpractice caps.

Progressive Party

Relatively consistent with the American Party agenda but has aspirations to expand greater government control over the pharmaceutical industry blaming it for the reason that health care costs are so high.

In favor of medical malpractice caps.

Patriots Party

Claims the current system is too expensive and needs fiscal reform but credits President Harris for giving all Americans health insurance. Is consistent in saying that they won't "take away insurance" but want to make it cheaper for all Americans. Stresses fiscal responsibility in health care. Also concerned with the doctor shortage and is pressuring President Newsom to take more action in that policy area.

In favor of medical malpractice caps and for greater tort reform.

Term Limits

American Party

Not in favor of Federal term limits, besides in the case of the 25th Amendment.
In favor of a maximum age on the Supreme Court.

Progressive Party

Generally in favor of Federal Senate and Congressional term limits and a retirement age on the Supreme Court.

Patriots Party

A minority are in favor of repealing the 25th Amendment. Not in favor of Federal term limits. Against a "maximum" age on the Supreme Court.

Budget/Economy

American Party

Before becoming a dying political party, they were in favor of continued spending to ensure that the bedrock of the American economy was sound even if it meant deficit spending.

Up until President Reynolds and Shock, the Patriot and American Party were on the same page with the economy, each trying what the other hadn't the previous term.

Progressive Party

Believe the economy has fully recovered and a Value Added Tax should be implemented at the Federal level. Wants to raise corporate taxes and close loopholes which have become a major problem in the post-catastrophe world.  Fiscally liberal leanings.

Patriots Party

In favor of a balanced budget amendment to the Constitution which President Newsom does not support behind closed doors. Have plans to reform the Federal Reserve, opposes the VAT as well as raising taxes on corporations. The party has been open to closing loopholes if the tax code is simplified. Wants to cut spending at the national level and let private companies take the lead in continued rebuilding. The more fiscal conservative party.

Rebuilding the Eastern States

American Party & Patriots Party

Expedited planning and rebuilding of the Eastern States. Both parties were willing to spend money to get the States rebuilt and people into new homes in order to build the economies in these states. Both parties were in favor of slowly devolving responsibilities into States and indirectly the people and businesses in the Eastern States in regards to rebuilding.

Progressive Party

Supportive of the rebuilding efforts that the American and Patriots Party have done so far but think that the Federal government should have continued oversight to ensure that high standards are met in each state in regards to efficiency, zoning and technology.

2040 continued

Vice President Kyou and Senator Julian campaign vigorously for their own party's nominations, respectively. Senator Julian, being the original founder of the Progressive Party, faces no opposition to the nomination but who his Vice Presidential-nominee will be has drawn national interest from rising members of the Progressive Party. Some operatives suggest that Julian pick a former American Party member as to unite the opposition to the Patriots Party...while others suggest picking a rising star in the Progressives to succeed him win or lose.

Vice President Kyou, although highly popular nationally is less popular within her own party. Kyou has to fight for the nomination against conservative Patriots Party Senator Maximilian Peleg of Virginia. In polls, Kyou leads Peleg 60-30-10 but 30% is a large minority opposing a popular incumbent. Peleg says that Kyou "might as well run as a Progressive because there's virtually no difference between the her platform and theirs."

After that commentary and more, the Senate Minority Leader strips Peleg of his leadership roles saying that "we need someone to unite our party, not divide it."

Kyou suffers in the polls and in the primaries, losing one of the first three states to Peleg but ultimately wins the nomination of the Patriots Party.

By the end of the nomination cycle, mid May 2040, Kyou and Julian are in a tie nationally at 41-41 with many people undecided…

May 2040

President Newsom remains popular during the nomination cycle even through a domestic hunger crisis in some Eastern cities which results in Congress passing large spending bills to not only help people in need but also to alleviate the source of the problem in the first place, hopefully. Economists predict that this “hunger crisis” has the potential to expand quickly and rapidly across the United States and credit Congress for taking action quickly.

Progressive Party nominee Senator Rudolf Julian selects newly elected Progressive Party Governor Giles Franklin of Texas as his running mate. Franklin was elected in 2036 and has been credited for balancing Texas’ budget as well as getting the Progressive Party’s agenda passed the Patriot Party controlled legislature. Franklin also successfully implemented bio-fuel transition programs for middle to low income consumers and is an advocate of President Newsom’s Mars Colonization program.

Vice President Primula Kyou was reported to have offered the nomination to Senator Peleg who bluntly refused her –but these accusations were denied by both the Vice President’s and Senator’s campaign offices. Vice President Kyou said that she “never offered the Vice Presidential nomination to Senator Peleg.” Ultimately Kyou selects Speaker of the House of Representatives Marcia Fulva as her running mate. Fulva is nationally renowned as a businesswoman who got herself elected to Congress after being displeased with the direction was going in. Fulva has been an advocate for more fiscal restraint by the Administration which Kyou hopes will help her with the base of the Patriots Party.

June 2040 Head-To-Head Polling…

Primula Kyou/Marcia Fulva: 45%
Rudolf Julian/Giles Franklin: 41%
Undecided: 14%

Summer 2040

Economists warn that if the Administration doesn’t take more action, the hunger crisis will spread quickly across the United States. Prices are beginning to rise and its showing in houses all across America where there is less food on the dinner table. President Newsom’s approval ratings begin to drop as Americans begin to fear as inflation ticks back up to 12%...

Both tickets campaign hard over the summer months with Vice President Kyou  beginning to open up a lead in the polls but still not reaching a majority.

Late September 2040

Due to international problems, dropping wages, inflation ticking up to 13% and unemployment rising in August 2040 and GDP decreasing for the first time in the Newsom Presidency, the American people are in a panic.

Farmers had been having problems for years –but never this bad. President Newsom tells Congress to nationalize the agriculture industry. Vice President Kyou hesitates when asked if she supports Newsom’s plan but ultimately backs it. Speaker of the House, and Patriots Party’s Vice Presidential nominee, Marcia Fulva stalls on bringing the Agriculture Nationalization Act of 2040 to the floor of the House but ultimately is forced to do so in October 2040. Economists bicker on if the ANA will ultimately help or hurt the economy –but agree that something needs to happen. Progressives in Congress are opposing the bill, and it has received only criticism from the Patriots Party.

Senator Rudolf Julian takes the opportunity to hit Kyou from the right on the White Houses’ spending problems which he said “drove up inflation like a teenage girl drives up a credit card bill while at the mall.” He adds in that “Americans are paying dearly for shoddy craftsmanship on legislation coming out of the Patriots Party controlled Congress.”
During the debates, Vice President Kyou is trounced by Rudolf Julian in all post-debate polls. Kyou had come off as indecisive.

In the Vice Presidential debate, Kyou’s running mate Marcia Fulva says she “disagrees with the Presidents plan” and that the bill was “dead on arrival.”

President Newsom’s approval rating drops to 37% by the day of the election. Even with calls from her own party to drop Speaker Fulva from the ticket, Kyou refuses to.

Vice President Primula Kyou of New York / Speaker Marcia Fulva of Wisconsin  - 241 Electoral Votes, 44.1% Popular Vote

Senator Rudolf Julian of New Mexico / Governor Giles Franklin of Texas – 416  Electoral Votes, 55.6% Popular Vote
Other – 0.3%

Vice President Kyou loses decisively to Senator Rudolf Julian of New Mexico who will be sworn in as the nation’s 55th President on January 20, 2041.
