By the time January 2023 rolls around the rate of infection has declined but it is still spreading. Parts of Kentucky, Ohio, Tennessee, West Virginia and Alabama are militarized. Construction efforts in the evacuated states virtually come to a halt and the American Red Cross says the Administration is not properly preparing their workers for the winter....

July 2023

With the recovery stalled due to the continuing smallpox epidemic unemployment jumps back up to 40% as Reynold's approval rating dips into the teens. The American Party controlled Congress tries to legislate demands on the bureaucracy as to how to handle the epidemic but the Reynold's Administration has its own ideas...impeachment is mentioned but it ultimately goes nowhere...

Former Senator Mike Lee an old Republican who now considers himself a member of the American Party says that "President Reynolds has proven her incompetence. She needs to get out of the way so our country can move forward and solve this problem."

The rest of the year comes and goes with millions of Americans living in fear...sometime in November 2023 after over 2 million people contracted the disease and nearly 750,000 died, the vaccine has finally been distributed to more than 2/3rds of the population over a year and a half later...

Pundits have said it would be impossible for Reynolds to recover from such a devastating mark on her record. Her approval rating has been in the single digits for months.

In January 2024 the Reynolds Administration feels comfortable enough with new checks in place that they can allow controlled traveling between the evacuated states and the rest of the United States. Many workers go back to their homes, after passing medical evaluations, having not seen their families since 2022 --or in some cases earlier.

In April 2024 the British Civil War ends with the dissolution of the United Kingdom into Wales, England, Scotland and the agreement that Northern Ireland will vote on if it wishes to become part of Ireland or remain independent.

What does bump Reynold's approval, although slightly, is her handling of riots and domestic uprisings across the United States...Reynold's forces use very different tactics than the way they handled the quarantine...

In May 2024 Senator Aaron Schock of Utah receives the nomination for the American Party and selects scientist William Nye of California as his running mate. President Kim Reynolds of Iowa receives the Patriot Party nomination but Vice President Gavin Newsom opts not to run with her for reelection. Instead Reynold's picks Congressman Corbinian Viet an Indian American. Interestingly enough one of his parents is German, the other Indian and he was born in the United States...

As the election approached Reynolds took credit for increasing employment (which has since again dropped to 38%) but the American people are not willing to forget their fallen brothers to the hands of smallpox which they blame on Reynolds.

*Just a note, I realize Schock is from Illinois. He moved west after the catastrophe like many other Americans.

November 2024 Presidential Election

Senator Aaron Schock of Utah/William Nye of California - 436 Electoral Votes, 61.7% popular vote - American Party
President Kim Reynolds of Iowa/Congressman Corbinian Viet of Michigan - 115 Electoral Votes, 31.3% popular vote - Patriot Party
Other Various Candidates - 7.0% Popular Vote

Senator Schock wins in a lopsided victory over President Reynolds. Many people doubt if its possible for a President to win a second term as President during these times...Exit Polls, when conducted, showed that both candidates favorability ratings were in the negatives although Reynold's substantially more than Schock...

Congressional Election Results

Senate (68 Seats):

American Party: 44 (+4)
Patriot Party: 19
Independent: 5 (+2)

House of Representatives (477 Seats):

American Party: 325 (+15)
Patriot Party: 113 (-21)
Independent: 39 (+6)

Unemployment on Election Day: 35%
Reynold's Approval on Election Day: 13% Strongly Approve/Approve, 67% Strongly Disapprove/Disapprove, 20% Unsure/No Opinion

January 2025

President Aaron Schock is inaugurated and like every President before him he promises to finish implementing what is now known as The Hagel Plan for Renewed Prosperity.

Schock pledges to continue rebuilding, get smallpox back under control with fatalities already decreasing, and to have more states up and running. Schock also has the task of fighting inflation which increased dramatically during the Reynolds Administration.

Former Washington State Senator and former Governor Maria Cantwell announces very early on that she is "interested in seeking the Presidency if our country is not on the right track in 2028." She would be 71 years old on inauguration day.

It is noteworthy that Presidents Obama, Gates and Hagel rank in the top 15 for greatest Presidents of all time. Gordon and McDaniels rank at the bottom of the pile with Reynolds and Harris both in the middle. McDaniel is also being mentioned as a contender in 2028. He would be 58 on inauguration day.

February 2025

The heavily controlled American Party Congress, controlling 68% of the House and 64% of the Senate immediately shifts into first gear.  A bill is passed setting up an exact timeline for setting up state governments in all of the evacuated states although many of its responsibilities will fall to the Federal government until the state is ready to take it over. The new state governments will be elected in 2026 and their old Constitutions will be used.

Washington DC, the former capital of the United States, will be considered part of Virginia. The executive capital was moved to Denver in the wake of the Catastrophe, the judicial capital to Sacramento and the legislative capital to Topeka, Kansas. The American Party controlled Congress is considering a bill to move the legislative and judicial capitals to Denver.

March 2025

Quietly, the bill to move the legislative/judicial capitals to Denver fails in both houses.
Small pox deaths continue to decline as does infection rates. Small pox epidemics are breaking out in other parts of the world where the death toll is much worse with vaccines being applied sporadically at best.

President Schock signs the "Schock - Nye Education Reformation Act" into law, redesigning the way math and sciences are taught in the United States and with new emphasis on engineering and energy related fields.

President Schock states that "tax reform" is his next highest priority.

June 2025

Northern Ireland votes to remain independent of Ireland.

July 2025

Canada's unemployment rate jumps to 23% after the bankruptcy of a major manufacturing corporation. Homelessness and poverty jump.

August 2025

Things get worse for Canada as small pox breaks out in Vancouver which has become a cesspool for homelessness and poverty. Thousands die within a week. After two weeks of extraordinarily high deaths the Canadian government asks the United States for help. President Schock sends in medical teams to help but they are unable to slow down the rate of death in Vancouver --but they are able to slow infections.

September 2025

The Canadian Prime Minister faces a vote of no confidence, and the independent Quebec supporters take to the streets in Quebec fearing that a smallpox scare could happen there as well (and that the current PM is not doing enough).

The government of Russia goes into exile as a military-coup takes over. The Chinese government, having become more stable since fighting back Democratic forces, threatens to invade if Russia's nuclear weapons are not secure.

December 2025

The year ends with unemployment down to 33%, inflation up around 14% and Schock's approval ratings at 46% and disapproval ratings at 39%

Oil prices have been sky high for many years now, and the Administration is being pushed to help find more alternative energy sources. Vice President Nye is leading the charge to do just that.

Internal international conflicts are up with many quasi-stable governments now in conflict with opposition forces...

January 2026

The Canadian Prime Minister, having survived the first round of a no confidence vote, is once again facing a no confidence vote. The PM calls the vote a "sham" and a breach of the "legislatures responsibility while we are in such a perilous time." The legislature overwhelmingly votes no confidence in the Prime Minister who refuses to step down from office. Pro-independence Quebec fighters and advocates take to the streets storming government buildings and setting arson to many.

The Canadian legislature elects a new Prime Minister, from Alberta, who vows to put down the rioters and to "silence" the former Prime Minister. Canada's government is now very unstable.

February 2026

With rioting widespread in most of Canada's major cities, many are crossing into the United States both legally and illegally. In fact, American workers found a colony of Canadians living in Maine. President Schock acts and allows many to be accepted as refugees.

Rebuilding continues in the Evacuated States with everything on schedule, for once, for the state governments to be back up and running.

March 2026 and the fall of Canada

On March 8, 2026 a portion of the military of Canada sides with the rioters and usurps the legislature and the governments power while another portion sides with the rightful Prime Minister. The two sides quickly are at conflict with each other trying to regain control of the legislature in Ottowa and a firefight ensues.

Over the following days the Canadian government ceases to exist as one entity and the United States mobilizes as a result. When American medical personell are attacked in Vancouver, President Schock orders paratroopers in to protect the Americans. Both sides of the Canadian conflict take this as an act of war and become openly hostile towards the United States.

President Schock orders more forces into western Canada, mainly British Columbia and Vancouver, to help evacuate American officials.

Quebec, after a few days, is mainly controlled by the pro-Quebec faction of the military and its supporters.

Red: Heavy American influence but not American controlled (Yukon is uncontested, British Columbia would be orange otherwise...Vancouver is pretty much American occupied)
Orange: "Legitimate" Canadian forces
Purple: Uncontested territories
Pink: Pro-Quebec forces

April 2026 through October 2026 and the Canadian-American War

April and May 2026 in Canada proved to be one of the most deadly months in Canadian history. Both sides armed to the teeth fought each other over Quebecs independence and blamed the other side for the decrepit quality of life that had emerged in Canada over the past few years --also fueled by regionalism.

Unknowingly to the public, President Schock and his advisors planned an intervention in Canada. They would wait for the pro-Canadian unity forces to make a public relations mistake and seize on it, making it into a full blown scandal, while Schock's CIA director suggested fabricating an atrocity of sort in order to enter the war.

President Schock in private said he wanted to intervene and it would help America recover --but that he did not want to "give the order" but if something happened then it happened...

June - July 2026

Reports that the pro-Canadian forces were murdering innocent civilians in order to gain information about pro-Quebec forces is reported by the media and intelligence officials. President Schock condemns the pro-Canada forces and vows to intervene if it continues.

A week goes by and reports are still coming out of Canada about civilian deaths. Schock orders US military forces into western Canada seizing many of the Canadian military's assets and quickly formally occupying Vancouver.

Schock's approval skyrockets as the intervention is seen by most Americans as moral, even though the atrocities were fabricated and inflamed by American officials unbeknown to the American public.

By October 2026, the US and Quebec formally occupy all or most of Canada. Pro-Quebec forces begin to establish their own government in Quebec while the United States takes an occupation role in the rest of Canada.  The Northern territories is largely unoccupied. The US is doing reconissance over Canada's frozen north to look out for pro-Canada strongholds.

November 2026

Party control of the houses of Congress remains the same but new elected officials are elected in the Evacuated States. Each evacuated state is given 2 Senators and one Representative.

Senate (100 Seats):

American Party: 60 (+16)
Patriot Party: 33 (+14)
Independent: 7 (+2)

House of Representatives (492 Seats):

American Party: 335 (+10)
Patriot Party: 118 (+5)
Independent: 39 (No Change)

(Increases are from new seats in Congress).

Unemployment rate in December 2026: 23%
Inflation: 15%
Shock approval: 63%
Disapproval: 33%

2027

Former Governor of Washington State Maria Cantwell says that she is "strongly leaning towards running against President Schock in 2028" as a member of the Patriot Party.

Former President Dustin McDaniel says that he might also run against President Schock.

The Canadians are not having a hard time adjusting to American occupation but the rest of the world is. Many other nations are calling it an act of American imperialism and say that President Schock is using Canada to help America get out of its own recession, however; no one suspects Schock of facilitating a phony reason for going to war with Canada.

Independent Quebec elects its own peaceful government early in 2027 as the American Party controlled Congress begins to create a plan to incorporate the occupied Canadian territories into the United States.

Unemployment drops to 18% as more Americans move back to the eastern seaboard and get work. Inflation is around 17% and President Schock's approval is still in the 60's.

2027 proves to be a very unexciting year with no major catastrophes in the United States and the Canadian occupation being rather uneventful with few skirmishes or riots.

2028

Former Governor/Senator Maria Cantwell and former President Dustin McDaniel announce their candidacy for the Patriot Party nomination for President in 2028. Cantwell is heavily favored in the polls.

The primary process begins with Cantwell easily trumping McDaniel, and President Schock easily winning renomination by he American Party.

Cantwell selects Governor Steve Bullock of Montana to be her running mate.
Vice President William Nye will remain on the American Party ticket.

May 2028

President Schock's approvals begin to come back down to earth as problems ensue over legal issues in the evacuated states. Shock issues an executive order stating that no claims may be made for insurance or for property prior to 2020 in the evacuated states. The public reaction is mixed, with many former land developers saying that the property is still theres, and with advocates saying that this allows them to start fresh. This issue had come up in earlier Administrations but claims had never gone as far as they did during the Schock administration.

Schock's approval is in the low to mid 50's.

October 2028

President Schock's CIA Director abruptly resigns from office. Without any official statement, President Schock appoints a new CIA Director which quickly gets Senate approval.

As the election approaches, polling shows that even though Schock's approval is in the low to mid 50's, Cantwell'ls favorability is much higher than his. Most pundits believe it is because she reminds voters of the way the country was before the catastrophe --especially since she's using it to her advantage when campaigning saying she was "personal friends of Chuck Hagel, Barack Obama and Bob Gates..."

During the debates the major issue that comes up is inflation. Schock argues for income, price and wage controls to fight inflation which Cantwell says failed under Nixon --while Cantwell argues for changes in monetary and fiscal policy in order to battle it. Cantwell says part of the problem is that "the past few Administrations have begun to print money like there was no tomorrow and now much of it is useless."

February 9, 2029

In an interview when asked about Nye resigning, Schock's former CIA Director says "I guess Nye found out what's really going on in the Administration" and declines to elaborate more.

The Schock Administration calls the former CIA Director a "former disgruntled employee trying to stir up drama for his own reputation."

February 12, 2029

The President denies the accusations. His FBI Director resigns the next day.

February 15, 2029

Leaders of the Patriot Party in the House of Representatives call for an investigation of the President and his officials.

The trial of President Schock becomes the prevailing news topic and all new initiatives by the President come to a standstill. Schock's approval rating drops to 40% with many people still supporting him because they are unsure of what exactly he is being accused of.

July 20, 2029

Congress gets a hold of the recordings from the conversation between Schock and his advisors including the former CIA Director where Schock gave them permission to "create" a reason for the US to go into war.

The President's approval drops exponentially. Schock calls the tapes a "national security concern" and that "Congress received those tapes by questionable means."

August 11, 2020

As the trial in the Senate continues, rumors start flying that President Schock may step down. The current Speaker of the House is a Congressman from Missouri Blaine Luetkemeyer who had been in Congress before the catastrophe. He is 77 years old. If Schock were to resign, Luetkemeyer would become President. There are some health concerns from members of his own party

August 15, 2020

The American Party  members of Congress from both houses meets privately. Senators express concerns over Luetkemeyer's ability to lead the United States and his prior health problems. Supporters of the Speaker say that his health problems are not severe and that he has been serving his country admirably thus far.

President Aaron Schock announces that he will resign from office effective in a few hours. He says that "my leadership is no longer valued by Congress, my party or the nation. Therefore, I am stepping down from the Presidency. I wish Speaker Blaine Luetkemeyer the best of luck as President."

Hours later President Blaine Luetkemeyer is sworn in by a Federal judge.

September 2, 2029

President Luetkemeyer says that former President Schock will not receive a pardon. He also announces that he will be asking for the resignation of the entire cabinet.

September 2029

Towards the end of September, the House elects a new Speaker, Congressman Scott White of Washington.

Federal officials indict former President Aaron Schock later this month by Grand Jury.

October 2029

President Luetkemeyer nominates Governor Lisa Madigan of Illinois to be Vice President at the same time he nominates the rest of his cabinet. Most of his cabinet is confirmed by the Senate via voice vote.

November 2029

With hearings preceding the vote to confirm Governor Madigan as Vice President ongoing, President Luetkemeyer is hospitalized due to gastrointestinal problems. Some in the Senate call for a quick confirmation but others, more loyal to the new Speaker, drag their heels for a little longer.

Governor Lisa Madigan is confirmed as Vice President on December 8, 2029.

In December 2029, President Luetkemeyer signs into law a bill that would allow entry of the most heavily populated Canadian provinces into the United States and give Canadian citizens citizenship after they pledge allegiance to the US.

2030

To no one's surprise early in 2030 President Luetkemeyer passes away and Vice President Lisa Madigan is sworn in as the 53rd President of the United States and third female President of the United States.

President Madigan comes in with a low approval rating, somewhere around 38% with 10% disapproving right off the bat. Party preference for this years midterm elections already heavily favors the Patriot Party.

Popular former Vice President Gavin Newsom is rumored to be considering a run for the Presidency in 2032.

President Madigan immediately starts trying to reign in unemployment and inflation. Unemployment is better than it has been but still too high at 14%. Inflation sits around 15% and has plateaued.

President Madigan approves plans to incorporate Canada and Puerto Rico. Puerto Rico will become the 51st state with 7 electoral votes in January 2031  followed by...

Vancouver (February 2031), 3 Electoral Votes
British Columbia (March 2031), 8 Electoral Votes
Ontario(April 2031), 24 Electoral Votes
Alberta (May 2031), 8 Electoral Votes
Saskatchewan (June 2031) 5 Electoral Votes
Manitoba (July 2031)  4 Electoral Votes
New Brunswick (September 2031) 3 Electoral Votes
Nova Scotia (October 2031)  3 Electoral Votes

New Electoral Votes: 65
New Representatives: 47
New Senators: 18

Yukon, Nunavut, and Northwest Territories will remain territories.

The rebuilding effort on the east coast is increasing and by July 2030 unemployment has continued to fall. The American Party remains deeply unpopular and there are increasingly more public divides in the party with many pressuring President Madigan to pardon former President Schock who is on trial currently.

By November, the stage is set for devastating loses for the American Party in the midterm elections.

Senate (100 Seats):

American Party: 47 (-15)
Patriot Party: 41 (+8)
Independent: 12  (+7)

House of Representatives (492 Seats):

American Party: 156 (-184) (32%)
Patriot Party: 239 (+131) (49%)
Independent: 97 (+53) (20%)

Both Houses turn over to Patriot Caucus which is a collaboration of Patriot Party members and Independents.

2031

In January President Madigan signs into law very conservative fiscal policy reforms which the members of her party balk at.
Madigan's approval highest point is 45% but her average approval is around 40% still. Her disapprovals have gone up to match her approval rating. She has never come close to 50% on either. Her favorability is more not sure than positive or negative with many commentators calling her the next Phil Gordon.

As 2031 goes on, Madigan struggles to make her economic and social policies connect with people. Congress is running the show with the Patriot Caucus passing bold reforms in tax policy as well as devolving responsibilites the Federal government took away from the states during the catastrophe. The Patriot Party affiliated Speaker of the House claims "the time for crisis is over. It is time we stop looking backwards and look to future."

GDP grows at a higher rate than usual in 2031. Madigan hesitates to send armed forces to the border with Mexico as illegal immigrants continue crossing over. Both parties call for action but the only thing they're getting is an indecisive President. Turnover in the White House, in terms of senior advisors, is high with former advisors called working for Madigan like "working for a sloth."

What does happen under Madigan's watch is the continued reduction of dependence on oil, now at only a plurality of fuel with biomass, solar, wind, geothermal and nuclear energy taking up the rest of the chart.

Canada is successfully, and rather quietly, integrated into the United States. Internationally, Israel wins, once again, its independence this time with what is left of Egypt, and Turkey recognizing it. Syria has no formal government, Lebanon is controlled by Israel while Jordan and Iraq have frequent skirmishes on their border. India and Iran have gone to war over the occupation of Pakistan while China works to contain an insurgency within its own borders.

The Russian Federation has divided into new republics and Europe is fairly stable after the splitting of Spain and Italy, respectively.

Germany and Brazil are attempting to form a new United Nations. The US has no interest in joining.

2032

Former Vice President Gavin Newsom of California defeats his opposition for the Patriot Party nomination for President. He chooses Senator Primula Kyou of New York, of Japanese and English descent but born in Ohio, to be his running mate.

The American Party hesitantly nominates Lisa Madigan who chooses Congresswoman Christine Jaden of Wisconsin to be her running mate. Madigan had left the position of Vice President unfilled since Luetkemeyer's death.

A popular New Mexico Senator, Rudolf Julian, dismayed at the renomination of Lisa Madigan, leaves the American Party in early February 2032 along with 3 other Senators and 56 Representatives, to form the Progressive Party. He announces he will run for President with Governor Noele Ashton of North Carolina at his side.

Economic growth in 2032 continues, but President Madigan isn't the one getting credit --its the Patriot Party getting credit. Senator Julian says the policies of previous Presidents are to thank, not the Patriot Party Congress.

So were 20 years in after the wave.  Pretty impressive. In fact, it appeared that though this crises nearly destroyed the US, it sent America's competitors into either wars with eachother or into Civil War....and gave the US a chance to reassert its sovereignty against large estates and to avert climate change.  Basically, in the year 2200, historians would have guessed that but for the wave, the US would be in the fight for its life by mid-century, but instead appeared to have quietly shored up its territorial integrity by fully annexing Puerto Rico and Canada, stopped the privatization of its polity, created a reliable healthcare infrastructure, proved the universiality of its justice systen, fought climate change, diversified its energy technology and delivery portfolio and had many of its national security problems implode on themselves.

A generation after the wave, it appeared America had a second chance in a reset world.

I think thats a positive reflection of the TL? haha. I would like to think that something good comes out of something bad --and this TL definitely has both good and bad aspects of policy making and people's actions...its getting a little harder to write now. I should not have gone to the "September xYear" format and stayed in the longform "Year" format instead which is easier to write in.

2033

Following the devastating loss for the American Party, two elections in a row, and the splintering of their own party, the leaders of the AP try to regroup and prioritize what their platform will be going forward.

President Gavin Newsom is sworn in in one of the first lavish inaugurations since President Obama. Unemployment sits at 13% on the day of his inauguration and inflation at 15%. After the confirmation of President Newsom's cabinet he pledges to serve out his entire term saying "since the catastrophe, including President Obama and myself, we have had 10 Presidents each serving on average a little bit over 2 years. Before the tsunami, this average was 5 years. This kind of change in leadership is not good for the country and I pledge that I will serve all four years of my term."

The most important issue to Americans is inflation --what they're earning isn't enough to sustain themselves. Most Americans think the middle class is rebounding but statistics show that there are less "super rich" people in the United States than at earlier times in history.

President Newsom says that he will pursue the formation of a Common Market with Mexico and some Central American countries in the coming years. He states that Central America must show its commitment to Democracy before any agreement can be put on the table. The Patriot Caucus in Congress in early 2031 will pledge millions of dollars in foreign aid to Mexico and Costa Rica to support democracy.

Congress, under the leadership of President Newsom, passes regulations on what type of building materials can or cannot be used in the new state and requires states to set up more extensive regulations in order to build with the most technologically advanced equipment.

Congress proposes a constitutional amendment giving the President the power of line item veto which can be overruled by both houses of Congress with a simple majority. The measure passes both Houses and goes onto the States for ratification. It must be ratified by 45 states.

President Newsom remains popular throughout his first year in office with an average approval of 67%, a low of 58% and a high of 80% when  he first took office. Newsom is also the first President to travel to a foreign country since President Obama in 2011.

Status of the world circa 2031:

Democracy Index

Dark Green/Light Green = Full Democracy (darker Green is more democratic)
Yellow/Orange = Hybrid regime, orange is more authoritarian, yellow is more democratic
Red/Dark Red = Authoritarian regime, the lighter red is less authoritarian, darker red is more...
Purple = Occupied territory

Democratic improvements are largely in Africa and the Middle East, while eastern Europe becomes more authoritarian.

Russia has split up into 3+ entities, while "Russia" the most western part of the former Russian Federation occupies Ukraine/Belarus. Estonia/Latvia/Lithuania are semi-occupied by Russia.

Afghanistan is occupied by India and Iran who are at war with each other. Pakistan is still occupied by India.

Andalusia and Basque Country split off of Spain. Sicily and Milano split off of Italy.

My ongoing project continues, even though I'm unsure how many people actually read it. I enjoy making it so whatever Smiley Although I am disappointed with myself over the Reynolds/Schock presidencies, then again --so were the American people...

2034

In the second quarter of 2032 enough states ratify the 28th Amendment to the United States Constitution to make it, well, the 28th Amendment. This amendment gives the President the power of the line item veto --which can be overridden by a majority in Congress unlike other Presidential vetoes.

The American Party is struggling to gain back the loyalty of the now growing Progressive Party who call for more spending in the areas of science and technology saying that The Catastrophe took us back years and years.

In Switzerland, scientists figure out how to control nuclear fusion and harness its energy...the largest breakthrough in science in human history...American scientists will try to replicate their results in the United States.

Unemployment continues to drop in the Newsom Administration and the Patriots Party and the Progressive Party are often on the same side of issues rather than against each other. The leaders of the American Party have become bitter as the Progressives for leaving them. Although enrollment in the American Party still remains the largest political party in the United States, pundits believe that these voters will not stay with the party, even though technically members...

In South America, Brazil and Argentina enter into a common market, which has been unheard of in South America. The intergovernmental body formed as a result of this agreement says that if all goes well, they would be interested in admitting more members. Uruguay, Paraguay, Bolivia and Chile immediately express interest in joining.

In the third quarter of 2032, the Cuban government falls due to internal conflicts within the governing party. President Newsom sends naval units to protect American interests in the Caribbean during this crisis including the State of Puerto Rico.  The President says that "both sides of this conflict in Cuba, are not friends to democracy or the United States" in a press conference on why he would not intervene directly.

President Newsom ends the year with high approval ratings around 55% and unemployment at 8% in the United States, the lowest since 2008. Inflation is still high and has plateaued at 16%.  During the midterm elections, Newsom manages to break the trend and holds onto his own parties seats in Congress mostly due to all the attention being on the incompetent American Party leadership.

2035

President Newsom, in the first quarter of 2035, announces that he will seek a second term as President. Vice President Kyou will remain on the ticket. So far, President Newsom has line-item vetoed over 2,000 lines of text and only 5 have been overridden.

Former President Schock makes some positive news, besides going to federal prison, when a team he commissioned to work on alternate energy sources for cars finds a functional alternate to oil that can be easily mass produced. The Department of Energy is looking into how they can implement this quickly with public and private companies and utilities.

Naval activity in the Caribbean continues with the United States armada protecting several islands including the Bahamas, who has a protection agreement with the US as do many former British isles, and Jamaica.

Unemployment is still decreasing, now around 7.5% and inflation still at 15%. President Newsom is picking up criticsm for not doing enough about inflation --with many Americans working long hours, the average workday is at 9 to 10 hours depending on what state you're looking at.

Scientists in the US, in November 2035, are able to recreate the fusion-related experiment that was successful in Switzerland.

At the end of 2035, American Party Senator, and faction leader, Linus Pascal of Michigan announces that he will run for President under the American Party saying he will "bring dignity back to our party after the disgraceful Presidencies of Aaron Schock and Lisa Madigan."

Governor Noele Ashton of North Carolina announces that she will seek the Presidency under the Progressive Party line as does Dezi Zachary, a former American Party Senator, and current Governor of Oklahoma and Carl Miquel a Progressive Senator from Florida with close ties to former nominee Rudolf Julian. Ashton and Miquel have vowed to drop out of the race if Julian wants the nomination.

2036

At the beginning of 2036 President Newsom rides the now completed Atlantic Corridor High Speed Train that runs from Florida to Maine in 4 hours reaching speeds up to 400miles per hour. President Newsom's approval ratings are at 58%

The election cycle begins with old school primaries in the Progressive Party with Zachary, Miquel and Ashton facing off in debates and early contests. The American Party nomination is contested by several candidates but Senator Pascal easily defeats his "also ran" opponents.

At the end of the Progressive Party's primary Carl Miquel is the nominee. Senator Miquel selects Progressive (and former American Party Congressman) Governor Jared Polis of Colorado.  American Party nominee Linus Pascal selects another party elder, Frederick Hannity of North Dakota.

April 2036 Polling:

Newsom/Kyou - 53%
Miquel/Polis - 35%
Pascal/Hannity -  10%
Undecided - 2%

Rubio - Dead
Haley - Dead
Paul - Dead
DeMint - Dead
(They all died in the Tsunami...)

Pence - Elected Governor, didn't seek higher office due to dealing w/ the refugees
Jindal - Didn't seek higher office due to dealing w/ the refugees
Kokesh - Doing whatever it is he does, in the Marines? Has a family and a nice ranch outside of Santa Fe?
Nunes - Somewhere in California? Perhaps?
Walorski - Somewhere in Indiana?

Both political parties, the American Party and Patriots Party have conservatives...its mainly economic policy that seperates the two. At first, there was no difference really, besides being different factions --up until recently in the timeline the American Party was more liberal in its economic policy while the Patriot Party was more conservative. President Newsom is a more liberal economic policy guy in the Patriot Party. With the downfall of the American Party, we'll see many of their "conservatives" go over into the Patriot Party, however; many social issues had fallen to the wayside as America recovered....

The Tea Party faction ceased to exist after the tsunami --just like the Republican and Democratic parties.

2037

President  Gavin Newsom of California and Vice President Primula Kyou are sworn in for their second term.

President Newsom appoints the first female Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, Gisa Corina, who is sworn in after being approved 98-20 in the Senate. Corina had previously been Solicitor General under the Reynolds Administration.

Newsom announces a large spending plan during his inaugural address that he says will put the United States on other worlds and will order NASA to spend humans to Mars.

In the first quarter of the year, Newsom's approval rating is 67% and inflation has dropped to 14% --which is Americans #1 concern according to poll. Congress approves of plans to centralize the United States capital in Denver, Colorado. The Supreme Court and Congress will be moving within the next year. Denver had already been equipped with advanced military technology capable of stopping attacks. What remains of Washington DC will, still, be made into a historical site.

In South America, Chile and Uruguay join the South American Common Market with Brazil and Argentina. Venezuela calls the market a "threat to Venezuelan security." Ecuador, Peru, Paraguay and Bolivia have all expressed interest in joining.

Egypt, Turkey, Jordan and Iraq have become more democratic over the past 5 years but central Asia has become more totalitarian. Iran and India are butting heads in the region as India continues to occupy Pakistan.

In East Asia, Taiwan declares its independence formally with little more than a verbal trantrum from China who's government is in disarray as opposition to the regime grows stronger.

Back in Africa, countries bordering the democratic South Africa become more democratic while central Africa and north-central Africa become more totalitarian...

President Newsom's popularity at the end of 2037 is around 57% and inflation at 13%.

2038

The Progressive Party goes on the offensive against President Newsom --helping kindle bickering within his own party. The conservatives in the Patriots Party had reluctantly tagged along with Newsom's agenda, which has been heavily reliant on spending, and are now demanding less spending and tax cuts to foster continued economic development. Members of Congress in the Patriots Party are facing challenges from more fiscally conservative candidates.

President Newsom chooses to send American troops to support the democratic side of a civil war in Honduras after the military ousted an authoritarian leader claiming to have the support of "the people." The American public is confused about if American forces are truly helping the democratic side in the civil war, and Newsom's approval drops below 50% for the first time in his Presidency -- 48% approving of his job as President.

After several weeks of American forces on the ground --and roughly about 100 American deaths--Newsom pulls the forces out after members of his own party threatened to use the War Powers Act against him. Newsom's approval upon withdrawal is 44%.

Midterm Elections 2038

Senate (118 Seats - 60 for majority):

Patriot Party: 52 (-6)
Progressive: 60 (+7)
Independent: 6 (-1)

House of Representatives (539 Seats - 270 for majority ):

Patriot Party:  277 (-27)
Progressive Party:  249 (+44)
Independent:  13 (-17)

Progressives pick up seats in both houses and win the majority in the Senate for the first time.

2039

President Newsom's approvals rebound slightly around the State of the Union and due to success in beginning to implement democratic elections in Honduras. His approvals rise to 49%. Inflation is down to 12%.

Newsom also apologizes during the State of the Union for not clearly communicating the goals and purpose of being in Honduras --and says that he alone is to blame. Many members of his own party, and the opposition, say its too late for apologizes.

2039 continued

Still in the first quarter of 2039, President Newsom travels to South America to promote the common market and to lobby Brazil and Argentina to allow Colombia and Costa Rica to join the economic zone. Venezuela saber rattles at the notion of an alliance forming around them but the despot government is too concerned over its own internal affairs to commit to aggression.

In the Middle East, history is in the making. Egypt, Israel, Turkey, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Bahrain, Iraq, UAE, Kuwait and what is to become the Palestinian nation agree to peace. Israel will give the Palestinian nation the Gaza strip and a designated amount of land connecting the strip to the Sinai Peninsula in Egypt. Egypt will be giving up territory on the Peninsula for the Palestinian nation. Both Israel and Egypt will reimburse their own citizens that are effected by the treaty.

Part of the treaty also allows the Kurds in Turkey and Iraq to form their own state. Iran is not part of the treaty which in history will be known as the Treaty of Istanbul.

Central Asia and India is the most violent area in the world right now with India trying hard to set up effective regional governments in Pakistan. A full war rages on between India and Iran who has other despots in Central Asia as its allies. The countries signing the Treaty of Istanbul have refused to get involved in the Iran-Indian War.

Elections commence without major problems in Hondouras. Costa Rica calls it "good news for Latin America"

Newsom's approval goes up again as he addresses Congress from its new home in Denver, a bit behind schedule. Inflation is down to 10%, Newsom's approval is 51% and America's GDP grew by a record 7% in the second quarter of 2039.

By the end of the year, Colombia and Costa Rica have been put officially on the path to join the South American Common Market.

2040

Vice President Primula Kyou of New York announces that she will seek the Patriots Party nomination for the Presidency. President Newsom endorses her immediately but a conservative Patriots Party Senator from West Virginia Maximilian Peleg announces that he will challenge Kyou for the nomination.

In the Progressive Party, Senator Rudolf Julian of New Mexico, the founder of the Progressive Party, announces that he will seek the nomination again. Julian had run in 2032 and lost to now President Newsom but had defeated the American Party candidate. It is unlikely that Julian will face opposition for the nomination.

Early 2040:

Kyou: 48%
Julian: 43%
Undecided: 9%

What party do you affiliate yourself with, if any?

Patriots Party: 38%
Independent: 30%
Progressive Party: 25%
American Party: 7%

If President Newsom was able to run for a third term would you vote for him?

Yes: 57%
No: 38%
Not sure: 5%

Can you give descriptions of the party?

Yeah, I've been avoiding fully doing that. I'll do it issue by issue, how does that sound? Feel free to suggest issues I should cover.

I'll do a few issues at a time...I'll add more soon.

Abortion:

American Party

Uphold status quo.

Progressive Party

Pro-Choice - Primary goal should be reducing the number of abortions but government should not restrict access to them. Many members are against the need for parental consent for 17 year olds and older but the issue of consent is not the party's platform.

Patriots Party

Also agrees that the primary goal should be reducing the number of people who need abortions but supports restrictions on abortion and strong parental consent laws. President Newsom is in line with the party platform on this issue.

Death Penalty

American Party

Before the fall of the American Party, its national platform did not have a clear position of the death penalty besides that it should be used less often.

Progressive Party

Opposed to the death penalty.

Patriots Party

In favor of the death penalty in violent crimes only or in extraordinary circumstances.  President Newsom has expressed "uneasyness" with the death penalty and no one has been executed by the Federal government under his watch.

Gun Control

American Party

See Patriots Party.

Progressive Party

Supports centralization of background checks when buying a gun or ammunition for guns. Does not support the sale of semi-automatic weapons or automatic weapons. Claims that current gun laws in the eastern states encourages vigilantes and that more money needs to be appropriate to police forces in the Eastern and (former) Refugee States.

Patriots Party

After the Tsunami, both major parties eased up on their positions on gun control due to crime in the "Refugee States" and in the "eastern states." Still to this day, gun control laws are lax in the Eastern States and Refugees states while tighter on the West Coast -- excluding in Colorado, where President Hagel was assassinated.

The Patriots Party is not in favor of centralization of background checks by the government, saying it gives too much power to regulate guns to the government and call the idea "authoritarian." Strongly support second amendment rights with less regulation. Generally more accepting of the sale of semi-automatics and opposed to the sale of automatic weapons.

Health Care

American Party

American Party President Kamala Harris passed socialized medicine in the United States during her term in office. This is the cornerstone of the now dead American Party's platform. The American Party was in favor of keeping the "American Universal Health Coverage Act" the way it is with only making reforms to it when needed. The most recent American Party President Aaron Schock passed substantial cost reducing legislation.

Against medical malpractice caps.

Progressive Party

Relatively consistent with the American Party agenda but has aspirations to expand greater government control over the pharmaceutical industry blaming it for the reason that health care costs are so high.

In favor of medical malpractice caps.

Patriots Party

Claims the current system is too expensive and needs fiscal reform but credits President Harris for giving all Americans health insurance. Is consistent in saying that they won't "take away insurance" but want to make it cheaper for all Americans. Stresses fiscal responsibility in health care. Also concerned with the doctor shortage and is pressuring President Newsom to take more action in that policy area.

In favor of medical malpractice caps and for greater tort reform.
