I think I already did this before. I'll make it more interesting by putting in the names of candidates I favored (or would have) who didn't win their party's nomination in the year in question.
2004: Al Gore 2000: Al Gore 1996: Bill Clinton 1992: Mario Cuomo 1988: Mario Cuomo 1984: Walter Mondale 1980: Jimmy Carter (more or less by default) 1976: Hubert Humphrey 1972: Ed Muskie 1968: Robert Kennedy (I know he was dead by the time the election was held, but this is hypothetical anyway, so what the heck.) 1964: Nelson Rockefeller 1960: Adlai Stevenson 1956: Adlai Stevenson 1952: Estes Kefauver 1948: Harry Truman 1944, 1940, 1936, 1932: FDR 1928: Al Smith 1924: Robert LaFollette 1920: James Cox (more or less by default, since everyone who ran that year was mediocre) 1916: Theodore Roosevelt 1912: Theodore Roosevelt 1904: Theodore Roosevelt 1892, 1888, 1884: Grover Cleveland 1880: Samuel Tilden 1876: Samuel Tilden 1864, 1860: Abraham Lincoln 1856: probably Fremont 1848: Martin Van Buren 1844: James K. Polk 1840, 1836: Martin Van Buren 1832: Henry Clay 1828, 1824: John Quincy Adams 1820, 1816: James Monroe 1812, 1808: James Madison 1804, 1800, 1796: Thomas Jefferson 1792, 1789: George Washington
In the years I left out, everyone who ran was so mediocre I couldn't figure out who I would have voted for.
