Kansas
Democratic Party Senatorial Primary
O'Dell v. Phelps.

And here's the map of how Phelps faired.

Phelps won two counties, O'Dell won 103 counties.

Shawnee County, Kansas (Topeka)

O'Dell - 12892 (92.3%)
Phelps - 1078 (7.7%)

Montgomery County, KS

Phelps - 1297 (52.9%)
O'Dell - 1156 (47.1%)

Cherokee County, KS

Phelps - 1570 (50.4%)
O'Dell - 1542 (49.6%)

Overall results

O'Dell - 111015 (69.2%)
Phelps - 49416 (30.8%)

After 1992, Phelps lost in two Gubernatorial primaries (one with 3%, and one by an 85%-15% margin)

Why did Phelps do so well in 92? Didn't people know how nutty he is or wasn`t he as nutty yet or was his opponent that damn liberal?

People probably weren't aware he was that nutty yet. Remember, that's before the internet, and his site is what gained him so much notoriety. Probably wasn't well known outside of Topeka.

As for his opponent being that liberal, remember these are Democrats still, and I doubt even in Kansas your average Democrat would take Phelps over someone like jfern.

I heard he campaigned as a "southern gentleman" and got his votes that way.

He won somewhere around 5. The Republican guy in NY won 2 counties.

Ugh.  I'm sad to see my former county (Johnson County) gave Fred Phelps between 10 and 20 percent.  Then again knowing how many Democrats were out there, he probably only got 1 vote and 6 voted for O'Dell.

Thanks.  Fortunetly I didn't live in Kansas at the time so I can say I didn't contribute to that asshole receiving nearly a third of the votes.
