Dems are giving away the store here and basically bailing out the GOP. The constitutional initiative was guaranteed to pass and the unenforced ban was going to be a great motivator for Dems. But of course they were fine completely taking it off the table.

Real life is not a game.

Voters here are not quite as stupid as you have been led to believe.

I personally like it that Democrats aren’t playing a game of chicken with civil rights.

This was the right thing to do. I'm sure Arizona voters will still be happy to vote for the pro-choice amendment this November.

The stakes are still clear, even without the ban taking place. Add the recent indictments of the fake electors, and Arizona still looks like a microcosm lf all the issues that are relevant in this campaign year.

I should remember the details, but on the state Supreme Court ruling, there was apparently some 1860s state law banning non compete agreements and some right wing business organization tried to get the law repealed arguing that it was too old. I don't know if anybody knows more about this.

The history of non compete agreements is actually kind of fascinating.

Arizona Senate votes to repeal Civil War-era near-total abortion ban

Quote
The Arizona Senate on Wednesday voted to repeal the state’s 160-year-old near-total abortion ban, three weeks after the state Supreme Court revived the law and thrust reproductive rights into the political spotlight.

The vote comes a week after three Republicans joined with all 29 Democrats in the state House to repeal the law, which bans abortion at all stages of pregnancy except to save the life of the mother and threatens abortion providers with two to five year prison sentences.

The bill next heads to Democratic Gov. Katie Hobbs, who is expected to sign it. It would clear the way for the state’s 15-week limit to remain state law. That restriction, enacted in 2022, does not include exceptions for rape and incest.

Republicans, who hold one-seat majorities in the state House and Senate, have faced increasing pressure to repeal what’s known within the state as both the pre-Roe and the territorial ban, a reference to the law predating Roe v. Wade and Arizona statehood.

Good news. I just hope voters in Arizona realize that they no longer have the Roe crutch and have to vote for pro-choice candidates every single election from now on if they don't want this reversed.

There are 15 examples out there of what can happen when they don't.

Incredible how even reverting back to the extreme status quo was too much for most Republicans in the legislature. Only three Repubs had the "courage" to join Democrats on this.
Shows how out of touch and delusional the party has become.

So what has changed in the past few weeks causing the ban repeal to pass? Back then, there was a House speak dead-set against repealing it and religious nuts praying on the Senate floor.

They came to their senses whether they liked it or not and realized AZ isn't GA or SC. Even republicans in AZ aren't that pro life.

They realized if the ban wasn't repealed that they would be screwed in November.

Yep, self serving. They’d still love to keep the ban I’m sure but they like their pensions and do nothing jobs.

Trump agreed with the repeal and Republicans just followed their master's voice.

This is a tragedy, but let's also understand that it was two Republicans in the Senate and three in the House.  It's not like the majority of the party voted for the repeal.

Exactly. Republicans are just a couple of seats away from bringing it back in 2026, so this is going to be a top issue in Arizona politics going forward.

They still might be, just given that it almost happened and there is likely a referendum in November.

Agreed. Democrats showing again that they are the principled ones and the ones you can trust to actually govern.

Also, there has been zero indication that this debacle has even hurt Trump in Arizona.

.

This is true and quite interesting.  The Trump +4-6 polls in AZ have continued through the month of April with no deviation.
