Based. It makes sense Moldova could join the EU without controlling Transnistria as West Germany and Cyprus joined the EU (or its predecessor organization) without being in full control of their claimed territory. This news important because no EU official had said it publicly before (afaik):

"⚡️EU ambassador: Moldova can join EU without Transnistria.

"We wouldn't see it (as) fair if (Moldova) is taken hostage by the solution to this quite complex problem," said the EU's ambassador to Moldova, Janis Mazeiks."

Moldova also could just join Romania and get EU and NATO membership for free.

The main issue with unification is that Moldovans are at best split on the issue. I assume the Romanian people and politicians would be in favor of absorbing Moldova. (That is assuming Transnistria would not trigger a war with Russia. I'd imagine a union would de jure include Transnistria, but de facto only include areas currently under Moldovan control/authority.) I am under that assumption because despite the massive financial burden it would entail due to Moldova being very poor, doing so would right the historic national wrong of having Moldova taken from Romania in 1940.

I doubt Sandu would try anything like this until after the election. It makes sense that the best time to try reunifying Moldova with Transnistria would be while Russia's military is preoccupied in eastern Ukraine. Any Russian threats to military intervene would be meaningless.

"Moldova eyes energy lever to topple Kremlin puppet regime in Transnistria"

"The face-off has been tense, but maintained by a powerful connection: Moldova gets cut-rate Russian energy via Transnistria, which gets hundreds of millions of euros a year in return. The link allowed Russia to preserve control over the strategic strip of land along the Ukrainian border, where its troops are stationed despite Moldova’s objections.

That dynamic is changing, however. Moldova in recent years has integrated with Europe under pro-EU President Maia Sandu. Brussels has offered millions of euros and more links to its energy supplies as part of a yearslong process to get the country, one of Europe’s poorest nations, ready for EU membership.

“Moldova is no longer dependent on Transnistria,” Moldovan Foreign Minister Mihai Popșoi told POLITICO. “When it comes to gas, we buy gas on the international market. On the electricity side, we are building high-voltage lines to connect ourselves to Romania.”

The switch is a problem for Transnistria, but also for the Moldovan government. Stopping payments to Transnistria would collapse the separatist state’s budget and leave hundreds of thousands of people there without incomes and basic services — a challenge that, for a country Moldova’s size, would be akin to the reunification of Germany following the fall of the Berlin Wall."

"The Moldovan parliament on May 16 approved holding a referendum on Oct. 20 on the country's accession to the EU.

The date of the referendum coincides with the upcoming presidential election."

"The referendum question will not simply ask whether Moldovans support joining the EU. Instead, voters will be asked to respond "yes" or "no" to whether they support introducing European integration into the Constitution of Moldova."

This poll does not include the diaspora vote. "In a press conference hosted by IPN, IMAS director general Doru Petruți noted that the poll was conducted only on the territory of the Republic of Moldova and, besides the respective results, there will also be diaspora votes." The diaspora vote would likely swing a 51% Dodon 49% Sandu domestic result in Sandu's favor since she won it 92.7% to 7.06% in the 2020 Presidential second round.

"Moldova, IMAS poll:

Presidential run-off election (different scenarios)

Dodon (PSRM~LEFT): 51% (+9)
Sandu (*-EPP): 49% (-9)

Sandu (*-EPP): 57% (-1)
Vlah (*): 43% (n.a.)

Sandu (*-EPP): 53% (-5)
Voronin (PCRM-LEFT): 47% (n.a.)

Sandu (*-EPP): 58%
Usatîi (PN-*): 42% (n.a.)

Sandu (*-EPP): 53% (-5)
Ceban (MAN~S&D): 47% (n.a.)

+/- vs. 2020 election
