These two cities are very similar in nearly every demographic characteristic. Yet Newport is extremely ancestrally Republican and Laguna Democratic. What is driving the difference in voting patterns. Is it simply political self-sorting?

Laguna/Newport:

White%: 82/78
Bach%: 67/67
Income: 216k/227k

Too many ancestries to list but also very similar. Laguna doesn't seem to be a gay hotspot either.
