I honestly never understood that notion.
He is a somewhat awkward, socio-politically controversial, mid-level politician that does not exactly scream in-touch with black American culture (if you want to play the identity politics card)
I agree. He seems very divorced from black culture. Trump has more cred than him. I would expect this pick to actually backfire as craven pandering, which would be funny when Trump always claims to be above identity politics and PC culture and pandering. On top of that, he’s not particularly charismatic or interesting.
He is one of Trump’s worst possible options.
