She picked up many of the endorsements before the Trone faux pas, so I don't think it's that. The party saw the opportunity to have a marginally more progressive Black woman in the seat who could serve for 30 years, rather than an older white man with fewer ties to the party machine. It makes sense, but I'm not sure it'll wind up working due to how well-prepared Trone was to campaign early.
