Which of these three categories do you think Germany best fits in?

East Germany is the epitome of Eastern Europe, West Germany is the epitome of Western Europe.

Germany is not Eastern Europe. Poland is more West European than Germany is Eastern, Cold War boundaries notwithstanding.

Definitely not Eastern Europe, and I'm not sure what Central Europe really is.

It's central geographically, sure, but throughout history Germany has played a complex role in both eastern and western affairs.  Probably best to understand Europe as a spectrum rather than strict zones or regions, and Germany lands right in the middle of that spectrum, both geographically and culturally.

"Central European" is kind of a relic term from World War 1.   Nowadays there's no real purpose to identifying a country as Central.  It's either western or eastern.
