McCain's currently struggling to beat Ron Paul.  That's not a good thing for him.

1. I hate myself for my last minute prediction change to Romney instead of Huckabee. ARG should have warned me.

2. The cities haven't begun to come in yet. the Des Moines precinct reported on CNN had McCain ahead by a mile and Huckabee doing badly. I expect both McCain and Guliani to improve on their current numbers later on in the night.

3. This is it for Romney. I would be very surprised if McCain doesn't now take New Hampshire.

How can they call it already?  There's only 30-some percent of precincts that have reported already...  Even with entrance/exit polling, they should at least wait until they get more ACTUAL results before calling it.

IMHO, of course  :-)

Well, I predicted this for Romney and was dead wrong.  Apparently I need to be more faithful in the GOP's ability to nominate the worst candidate they possibly can.

Republicans chose a populist over big business supporter. Congratulation Mike Huckabee, you're Pat Robertson 2.0.

OK, get this straight.

There is no way the Republican Party will ever nominate Huckabee.

The party does not want to have a repeat of the Goldwater debacle of 1964.

Yeah, and I thought there was no way Huckabee would win Iowa.

McCain attacks Romney's "negative" campaign. McCain can't resist a few cheap shots, even when Romney's just lost big. The enmity between these two...

McCain just realizes that the next round, Huckabee will third place at best.  Huckabee has to win NH, just to stay in the game.

I don't get that, though it seems to be a common opinion. I think HUckabee would be a much stronger candidate than Romney. He would at least keep the base together. He seems like the kind of guy people like, as opposed to ROmney.

JJ: I suppose you mean Romney in your last sentence and not Huckabee, right?

No, Huckabee does not need to win NH to stay in the game. He needs to come in third. This basically sets Huckabee against the winner of NH in South Carolina.
I think this weakens Romney a lot and unless something happens to McCain before Tuesday, he is out, as it has been said here many times before.

Oh sure, he'd keep the base together, but a very religious man from the South with a rural feel to him?  I think anyone outside the base can tell where they've heard that one before.

Huckabee is a southerner, so he's expected to win SC.  NH is the key, and a lot of the likely "drop outs" supporters will go to McCain.  A broader support for McCain versus no new support for Huckabee.  It will be over by March 1st, provided Romey loses in NH.

Fun factoid of the day:

Huckabee is the first person not named Bush or Dole to win the GOP caucuses in Iowa since 1984.  In fact, aside from incumbent presidents, he's the first person not named Bush or Dole to win the GOP caucuses in Iowa period, stretching back to the birth of the modern nomination process in the 1970s.

hahaha . . . that's pretty funny when you come to think about it.  A lot of "dynasties" (if you want to call it that) have cropped up over the past few decades.
