Stalin wasn't really all that important in 1923.

Well I was'nt able to think of any other significant Communists who could take over after the deaths of both Lenin and Trotsky.

Looking forward to the Presidential Election of 1924!

I wonder if my prediction of General John J. Pershing making a possible enterance into politics will come true once the 1924 Presidential Election is updated? If he does, it would most likely be as a Republican as I cannot forsee him joining the Populist bangwagon.

Anywho, as of December 1923, is Matthew Charlton of the Labor Party Prime Minister of Australia due to the death of Prime Minister Frank Tudor on January 10, 1922? Or is the Nationalist Party back in power with either Billy Hughes or Stanley Melbourne Bruce as Prime Minister?

1924:The Great Landslide

The Republican National Convention

Before the 1924 Convention even begins everyone already knows what they think will be the ticket, another term for Johnson/Coolidge.  Everyone agreed that the previous term of the President had been a huge success with a soaring economy, strong foreign relations, and a successfullyprosecuted war. There had never been a party as prepared as the Republicans were for this election.

However a surprise appears before the convention appears on the day of the Vice Presidential ballot when Vice President Coolidge announces he will not run for another term as Vice President.  Instead he recommends(under orders from the President) that general and hero John J. Pershing be nominated for the vice presidency.  This is promptly done and Pershing is officially the Vice Presidential candidate by acclamation.

Time Magazine following the nomination of Pershing

Populist National Convention

The 1924 Populist Convention is one of the most morbid in a very long time.  Everyone within the party realize that there is little, if any chance at all for them to claim the presidency in such a strong Republican year.  There are many dark horse candidates.  They quickly decide that no party rising stars will be nominated.  Some talk about nominating President Bryan or President LaFollette but neither will accept the nomination, saying it may hurt their legacy.  And important moment is given at the convention when soldier and American hero Walter Chandler gives a big speech in support of the party, he is seen as a big up and comer in politics if he chooses to take it.

Finally the party decides on Thomas R. Marshall, the Vice Presidential candidate from 1912, a genial old man who is still a reasonable candidate, for President.  For Vice President they choose Josephus Daniels, Senator from North Carolina.

The General Election

President Johnson campaigns throughout the nation with General Pershing at his side.  Former Senator Marshall on the other hand goes through a lackluster porchfront campaign almost never attending campaign stops and only doing so to help out senatorial or gubernatorial candidates.

The election is an amazing endorsement of President Johnson.  The Populists are destroyed in the congress as well, being reduced only to a handful of seats, even in places they had previously been gaining strength such as the south.  Senator Josephus Daniels, the Populist VP candidate was even defeated for reelection.

1925:  A Return to Normalcy

1925 quickly turns into a year of mourning for Populists.  In addition to the early death of former Vice President and current Senator John Walter Smith of Maryland, the first two Populists presidents to ever hold the presidency die in the middle of the year.  First President La Follette dies at the age of 70 after a five month fight with cardiovascular disease in mid-June.

President La Follette just days before his death.

President La Follette's son, Senator Robert LaFollette Jr. would give his father's eulogy and would use a quote of his father's in preperation for the upcoming 1926 Gubernatorial election for Wisconsin, taking up the mantle of the LaFollette's of Wisconsin as a dominant family in the Populist movement.  His brother Phillip meanwhile was preparing for a congressional race himself.

Just a month after the death of President LaFollette, the nation's only truly popular Populist President would attempt to be contacted as lawyer for what became known as the Scope's-Monkey trial, though with declining health and what he considered to already be a fruitful career he turned it down and the trial was lost to Clarence Darrow which gave Darrow a national name.  Many thought Darrow wanted a political career.  However five days after the end of the trial President William Jennings Bryan died in his sleep.  All across the nation people of all political persuasions mourned the death of the three-term wonder.  At the funeral of the Great Populist speechs were given by his brother Nebraska Governor Charles Bryan, President Johnson, and Vice President Pershing, however the biggest speech of the proceedings was by little-known Colorado Governor William Sweet, who was facing a tough senatorial campaign in 1926 againest KKK backed candidates.

Governor William Sweet

Even while the Populist party's first generation of leaders was passing on the Republican party continued to strengthen it's stranglehold on America.  the nation continued to grow more prosperous economically.  Senate Majority Leader Charles Curtis began to push through some of the President's agenda as well as one of his own, the equal rights amendment.  The Amendment would not even make it to the Senate floor.  Meanwhile much consideration was put into an international organization by many Republicans however this idea was not acceptable to the President and the more isolationist wings of the party.  Vice President Pershing began working behind the scenes, trying to convince the President that such a move would be worthwhile.  However it was put on the backburner until after the 1926 midterms.
