He would've knocked Santorum and Bachmann out of the race and took the nomination. He'd be doing much better than Romney right now and possibly be leading.

I don't think he'd have won the nomination.

But if he had, then the various social issue blowups over the year, over stuff like contraception, would have hurt him more, and his candidacy would have blown up completely over Akin:

OTOH, if Daniels was the nominee, I think he might have a slight lead over Obama.  Or at least, he'd be doing a bit better than Romney is now.

Wrong year for him to run - more focus on economic orthodoxy, Akin/Mourdock comments, etc.

I think you could link Akin and Mourdock to Huckabee much easier, but at the same time, he really campaigns like a faux-populist, so he could get some serious backing in spite of that.

He would have been the candidate needed to defeat Romney in the primaries. Not too sure about the general election though. I could see some of his social positions blowing up in his face.

Akin and Mourdock and the like would ruin him. They might be on the level of 47% or worse.
