They help run churches, do charitable works in the name of the church, praise the lord, etc. That's my understanding at least.

No, they used to do all those things.  Now their main purpose is to support radical liberal political causes and cause problems.

Nuns used to have a major role in the Church... the irony is that while the Church modernized, the role of the nuns diminished significantly until now they are functionally useless.

They used to be used to beat the crap of children although I guess they generally can't get away with that any more.

Their position should be abolished, along with their entire church.

Nuns and convents exist to provide asylum to high profile lounge singers. Duh.

A nun spoke at mass today, requesting donations for a clergy retirement fund, and I realized it was the first time I've seen a nun since I was in high school.

The nuns I know vote soley out of opposition to abortion, and are completely loyal Republicans.

That's very different.  Not too many of them left.

Most nuns I know hang out at campus ministries at Universities, wear no habits, and live in independent communes.

My experience of nuns in west-central Scotland is similar to Franzl's - old, habited and shaking charity boxes in the high street. Not a young person's calling these days. Then again neither is the priesthood.

Ah, the good old days.

I have met maybe a dozen nuns in my life.  They are all un-habited communists.

I've only had one nun as a teacher in my entire academic career. The schools that I went to didn't really have many of them teaching classes. The one that I had was a St. Joe's nun. I love her but the woman was definitely left of center and a strong Catholic feminist (Pro Life though). No habit either.

Not quite the good old days for those who remember the convents and the scared girls forced there because they fell pregnant or got into a spot of bother. Nor quite the good old days for the occasional 70 year old nun who gets investigated by the police for allegations of abuse at these thankfully closed institutions. Nuns are a little like 'ghosts' in the West of Scotland Catholic community these days as a result of that. Which is why, the Catholic community here in general tends to hold little respect for or trust in the hierarchy. And I love them for it Smiley

We could do with younger priests and nuns, but we don't even have a seminary in Scotland now. Of course that was due to Vatican II and the move towards community rather than remote training. However the whole thing never quite worked out.

Thanks for noticing.  Every nun I have ever told that to says, "Yeah, I've never heard THAT before."

But it's not like I stop...

I had 4 nuns in grammer school.  One was the principal, two managed the library, and one taught 2nd grade (she was meannn, but died while I was in 1st).

They were Sisters of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

They all wore this:

as opposed to this:

Those are Poor Clare nuns, and my parish/school was St. Clare's but the nuns weren't.

In high school, we had 3.  One ran the library, one was in charge of registration, and one was a teacher.  None of them wore any headgear.

My grade school principal was a nun. Other than that, while I was there, we had them teaching the "Special education" type classes. They were from the Holy Family order (we are right across the street from Holy Family University).

We had more teaching at my high school but, as I said, I only had one of them and she wasn't your typical nun. We had several types in high school (St. Joe's and IHM are the two that I remember. I think almost all of them fell into one of those two orders).

I wonder what drives many Catholics towards social liberalism, particularly when in Scotland they are the forefront of the labour movement, in Northern Ireland the Nationalist (Catholic) parties are pro gay rights etc...I think that probably deserves a topic of it's own actually.

I am not religious at all, but growing up in a christian family, I have much sympathy for people who devote their lives to what they believe in.

I wonder what drives many Catholics towards social liberalism...

Perhaps an accurate reading of and high regard for Scripture?  <grin>
