Those boundaries are amazingly un-gerrymandered.  Bexar County, Dallas County, Harris County.

No, they were just grossly malapportioned. Yay.

The difference between the Northeast and the South is especially interesting. In the early 1990s, the Democrats still held a majority of the Congressional districts in the South (it stayed that way until 1994). And the Republicans still hold a whole lot of their ancestral districts in Upstate New York, Eastern Connecticut, Massachusets and Maine (I think Olympia Snow represented Maine in the House back then).

Rockefeller Republicans and Dixiecrats.

I can do other 1950s House maps, if there are any you'd like to see.

This stuff is remarkable and so, so, so needed. It's nice to be able to actually visualise House elections from back then.

Definitely. I just wish I had county data to go along with it. Alas, that's a project for another time.

If there are any of those maps that you'd like to see shaded, I could probably do that.

Indeed.  Fuzzleton deserves some kind of award.

P.S. I'd love to have the templates for each year, if you've got them Smiley

I might be able to make a 1946 map, but it wouldn't be shaded unless someone knows where the result data is.

A 1946 map would be so awesome.  Frankly, so would a 1948 map.  And 1950.  And really every election until 1974.

Also, here.

(Could you also include the results of the elections for delegates to Congress from the Alaska and Hawaii territories?)

1952 House Election Map, with shades:

There were a lot of unopposed elections in the Solid South (Texas only had one contested race!) and California, but outside those two, there were only two: one in Iowa and one in Ohio. I also included the vote for the congressional delegates from Alaska and Hawaii.

Of note is that about 1/5 of the 90% Democratic shades in the South were contested by Republicans, but who just were crushed any way.

These maps are absolutely beautiful and passionaling, and this whole thread is one of the most interesting we've ever had. Thank you people for providing us so much stuff. Smiley

This map is also quite interesting. The Republicans are starting to win places below the Mason-Dixon line (and not just Eastern Tennesse), like parts of Florida and Texas.

And the Democrats are doing *much* better up north, including rural areas, than in 52.  New England seats go 2:1 R to 2:1 D.

Indeed. Connecticut, Vermont and Maine are especially striking in that respect.

Vermont wasn't Democratic in 1974.
