A court in Norway has ordered a new psychiatric evaluation of mass killer Anders Behring Breivik after an earlier report found him legally insane.

Judge Wenche Elizabeth Arntzen said in Oslo that the new evaluation was necessary because of widespread criticism of the initial findings.

"Due to the gravity of this case, the criminal responsibility [of Breivik] must be examined again," Judge Arntzen told reporters.

Two new experts, Agnar Aspaas and Terje Toerrisen, were named to evaluate the killer's sanity.

The judge said her decision did not "imply any criticism of the initial experts", and stressed "the need to clarify the case as much as possible".

Observers have asked whether someone who is suffering from a serious mental illness could have carried out such a well-planned attack.

Last week, an expert team of four psychiatrists monitoring Breivik said they believed he was not psychotic, contradicting the findings of the psychiatrists initially appointed by the court.

On the first day of his long-awaited trial, Anders Behring Breivik rejected the authority of the court as it sought to assign responsibility for the July 22 attacks that shocked Norway and jolted the image of terrorism in Europe.

Dressed in a dark suit and sporting a thin beard, Breivik smiled as a guard removed his handcuffs in the crowded court room. The 33-year-old then flashed his salute before shaking hands with prosecutors and court officials.

"I don't recognize Norwegian courts because you get your mandate from the Norwegian political parties who support multiculturalism," Breivik said in his first comments to the court.

Actually, one of the lay judges was disqualified today from serving on the court because he had posted on the Internet that he'd  support the death penalty for Breivik.

One might almost think the man is a cold-hearted mass murderer.

Although insanity seems to be the only way to get him locked up indefinitely it seems more morally interesting if he ends up being declared sane. It'd certainly make it hard on those who don't believe in evil people.

Not quite.  First off, not all states have the death penalty, and there would be the strong likelihood of him being found insane.  However, there would be no chance of his receiving a mere 21 year sentence for what he had done.

The desire is for a trial as normal as possible. Anyway, his own delusional statements aren't being broadcast.

Nobody should really care about that guy. Sentence him to life in prison with additional locking up after that, put him in a jail cell for 23.5 hours a day and give him bread and water and nothing else, no TV, no Internet, no books, no nothing.

Beside that I'm personal tired of hearing about trial, but it have served a nice purpose, Breivik look more and more like the archetypical basement dwelling loser.
