Welcome back, besides the presidency being on the line tonight. The balance of power in the congress is also up for grabs. It looks good for democrats here too. We had a few senate races close their polls at the 7 o'clock hour, lets look them over.

First, a little bit of a bright spot for republicans. In Vermont, Carroll Page, the republican incumbent, easily wins reelection to the senate tonight. Page wins in Vermont.

Carroll Page Wins Vermont Senate Election

In Florida, Park Trammell the democrat running in that race. Trammell wins the senate race in Florida tonight. A hold there for the democrats.

Park Trammell Wins Florida Senate Election

In Virgnia, Claude Swanson, the democratic incumbent, wins another term to the senate there. He ran unopposed and he wins obviously very big tonight. Swanson wins in Virgnia, holding that seat for democrats.

Claude Swanson Wins Virgnia Senate Election

There are some races however that are too close to call at this hour.

In Indiana, a race between democratic incumbent John Kern and republican challenger Harry New. That race is undecided at this hour. Kern fighting for his political life tonight.

Also a special election in Indiana, its incumbent democrat Thomas Taggart running against James Watson. That race is also undecided at this hour.

Okay, lets look at our senate map and the senate count after these projections.

Republican: 25        Democrat: 45        49 needed for absolute majority

Democrats obviously doing well already tonight. I mean look at that senate count, they are only four away from a complete majority in the united states senate.

And the presidency is going very well for them, at least so far.

And stay here, we have two more projections for the presidency as polls close at the 7:30 PM time mark on the east coast.

First in Ohio, this is a tough battleground state when it comes to the race for the presidency. Like four years ago, however, Ohio goes for Marshall.

Thomas Marshall Wins Ohio

And in West Virgnia, President Marshall wins this state again by a solid margin. Marshall wins easily in West Virgnia.'

Thomas Marshall Wins West Virgnia

Okay lets look at the map and the electoral vote count.
Gallinger: 0        Marshall: 101        266 needed to win

Continues to be a good night for democrats. Its `1912 all over again, maybe even a bigger victory. We'll be back, stay with us.

In Delaware, this is continued good news for the democrats tonight. President Marshall wins in Delaware tonight.

Thomas Marshall Wins Delaware

In Illinois, republicans won it very narrowly four years ago. It was targeted by both sides this time, Illinois is undecided at this hour.

In Maine, we can also say that this state is undecided at this hour. Too close to call in the state of Maine.

And in Maryland, another big win for the President tonight. Marshall wins in Maryland.

Thomas Marshall Wins Maryland

We can also say that in Massachussetts, Massachussetts is undecided at this hour.

We can also declare that in Mississippi, Mississippi will go for the President tonight. Marshall wins very easily in the state of Mississippi tonight.

Lets also turn to the senate races. We have some projections, lets look them over:

In Connecticut, a race between republican incumbent George McClean and democratic challenger Homer Cummings is undecided at this hour. McClean vs Cummings in Connecticut is undecided at this hour.

In Delaware, we can also declare that a race between republican incumbent Henry du Pont and democratic challenger Josiah Wolcott. That race is too early to call at this hour, means we don't have enough votes in yet to call it either way or even say it is undecided. This senate race in Delaware is too early to call tonight.

In Maine, a race between democratic incumbent Charles Johnson and republican challenger Fredrick Hale, that race is undecided at this hour. Undecided in the Maine senate election at this hour.

In Maryland, a race between democratic incumbent Blair Lee and republican challenger Joseph France is undecided. Lee survived a tough primary fight earlier this year, can he survive a close race for reelection tonight? We just can't say at this hour, its undecided in the Maryland senate race.

In Massachussetts, a race between republican powerhouse senator Henry Cabot Lodge and his democratic challenger John Fitzgerald is undecided at this hour. Undecided in Massachussetts.

In Mississippi, however, John Williams is easily returned to the senate tonight. Williams wins in Mississippi.

In Missouri, another race undecided at this hour. This is the one between democratic incumbent senator James Reed and republican challenger Walter Dickey. That race is undecided at this hour.

Heres a projection...

Oh finally

In New Jersey, a democratic senator goes down. Joseph Frelinghuysen defeats democratic incumbent James Martine. Frelighuysen wins in New Jersey

In Texas, Charles Culberson, the democrat, wins another term to the united state senate from the state of Texas. Culberson wins in Texas, holding that seat for the democrats.

We have a little bit of good news for republicans right now. First in Illinois, this is a state that the President fought hard to carry this time after narrowly loosing it last time, but it was not to be. Senator Gallinger wins in Illinois.

Jacob Gallinger Wins Illinois

And in Vermont, Vermont will go to the senator tonight. Gallinger wins in Vermont, as expected.

Lets come back as polls have closed in two more states and we have some more projections. Both are for the President.

In Arkansas, President Marshall easily wins here, as he did four years ago.

Thomas Marshall Wins Arkansas

We can also declare that in North Carolina, North Carolina will go again tonight to the President. Marshall wins in North Carolina.

Thomas Marshall Wins North Carolina
Gallinger: 33        Marshall: 215        266 needed to win

A senate race to tell you about. In Arkansas, we can declare that in Arkansas, William Kirby will be ther next united states senator from Arkansas. A hold there for the democrats.

William Kirby Wins arkansas Senate Election
Republican: 27        Democrat: 49        49 needed for absolutemajority

And we can declare now that the democrats will officially retain control of the united states senate.

We can also declare at this time that senator Gallinger will win Pennsylvania tonight. Gallinger wins in Pennsylvania.

Jacob Gallinger Wins Pennsylvania

Gallinger: 71        Marshall: 215        266 needed to win

With only 266 electoral votes needed to win, the White House is hoping that the 9 o'clock hour will do it.

New York with forty-five electoral votes will be the big prize to watrch at that hour.

The President can win without it, but senator Gallinger probably can't.

Welcome back, it is 9 o'clock on the east coast and we have some more projections to tell you about. As another set of states have had their polls. There are enough electoral votes out and floating around to make someone President of this country. We have some new projections, lets look them over.

In Arizona, voted big for Marshall four years ago and does so again tonight. Arizona goes for the President tonight.

Thomas Marshall Wins Arizona

Colorado, a state that Marshall led in for a long time but senator Gallinger made an effort in at the end. Colorado is undecided at this hour.

In Kansas, a battleground state this year. Kansas is undecided at this hour.

In Louisiana, good news for the President. President Marshall very easily carries the state of Louisiana again tonight.

Thomas Marshall Wins Louisiana

In Michigan, however, this is a little bit of good news for the republicans. Senator Gallinger, Jacob Gallinger wins Michigan tonight. Michigan for Gallinger.

Jacob Gallinger Wins Michigan

Diddo in Minnesota, another normally solid republican state on the presidential level, does it tonight. Minnesota goes for Gallinger.

Jacob Gallinger Wins Minnesota

In Nebraska, undecided in Nebraska between Marshall and Gallinger at this hour.

In New Mexico, President Marshall carries this state again as he did four years ago. Marshall wins in New Mexico.

Thomas Marshall Wins New Mexico

In New York, a big state on the board tonight. New York with its forty-five electoral votes, that state is undecided at this hour. President Marshall carried it four years ago narrowly and can win without it. However, if Gallinger is going to make any sort of comeback, it needs to start in New York among other places. New York is undecided at this hour.

Diddo in Rhode Island. Rhode Island is undecided between Marshall and Gallinger at this hour.

The same story in South Dakota. Undecided in South Dakota.

In Wisconsin, this state, despite voting narrowly for President Marshall four years ago. Wisconsin goes for Gallinger, the republican tonight.

Jacob Gallinger Wins Wisconsin

In Wyoming, we can say that at this hour, Wyoming is undecided. Undecided in the state of Wyoming.

Okay, after those projections, lets look at our electoral map:

Gallinger: 111        Marshall: 231        266 needed to win

Panel, any thoughts?

This doesn't appear to be the landslide victory for Marshall that we saw four years ago. I would expect him to have somewhere around 350 or 375 electoral votes.

Still a very strong victory.

Yes, but anyone in the Marshall camp that was hoping for another 400 electoral vote victory, I don't think its going to happen. The president will probably loose New York.

It might be too early to call on that.

We can declare New Hampshire for the President.

Thomas Marshall Wins New Hampshire
Gallinger: 111        Marshall: 235        266 needed to win

And Massachussetts goes for Gallinger.

Jacob Gallinger Wins Massachussetts
Gallinger: 129        Marshall: 235        266 needed to win

Were coming back. Stay with us.

Welcome back, this is another brief election 1916 update. We are ready to project that the state of South Dakota will go into Senator Gallinger's column tonight. Gallinger wins South Dakota. The President had some hope here in the final days, but for most parts this was expected. Gallinger wins in South Dakota.

Jacob Gallinger Wins South Dakota
Gallinger: 140        Marshall: 235        266 needed to win

When we have another projection, we will come back with you. But, if we don't between now and the top of the hour, election 1916 coverage will return with the 10 o'clock hour polls closing. Stay with us for more.

I'm sorry, we have another one coming quickly right now. In the state of New Jersey, this was expected to go republican this time and it does. New Jersey goes for senator Gallinger tonight.

Jacob Gallinger Wins New Jersey
Gallinger: 154        Marshall: 235        266 needed to win

I think our panel wants to weigh in for a moment.

Yeah, I think these projections, small as they may be. But, these picking up a state here and there is bringing some new energy into the Gallinger campaign.

Well certainly they didn't want to loose in a landslide like what happened four years ago. This is turning into a respectful showing for the republican ticket.

Any of you seeing an upset nationally coming?

Oh no, I mean look at the big lead that the President has overall. President Marshall is only thirty-one electoral votes away from the presidency. Senator Gallinger, help me with the math here, he is one hundred and eleven electoral votes away. The winner is clear at this hour.

Thank you panel and we will be back when another projection comes our way. If none do before the 10 o'clock hour, then election night 1916 coverage will return at the top of the hour. Stay with us. This has been an election night 1916 update.

It is 11 o'clock on the east coast, welcome back to election night 1916. We have some projections, as the final polls close across the country. This couild be the hour of decision.

In California, well democrats carried it four years ago and thought they would have a chance there tonight. We can't call it yet, its undecided, but Gallinger leads there. Gallinger leads in California but its undecided at this hour. Undecided at this hour.

In Oregon, we can say a little bit of just the opposite. Marshall leads here, but its undeicded at this hour.

Washington state, Washington state is just purely undecided. Its very close there, we can say that at this hour. Purely undecided at this hour.

Diddo in Idaho, undecided in Idaho.

Wow the 11 o'clock hour did not bring us much.

This coming in now, now coming in. We can declare that in California, senator Gallinger will carry that state. It was undecided for a few moments, we said that Gallinger led, and now he carries the state. Gallinger wins in California.

Jacob Gallinger Wins California
Gallinger: 196        Marshall: 252        266 needed to win

Only fourteen away, thats either New York by itself or two other states put together.

Will he get there?

I think the President will and there will be a margin. Look we expected senator Gallinger to run a good tough campiagn and he has. But, by the end of the night, I'm confident the President will be reelected.

The Gallinger camp on the other hand?

They are doing better than what they thought.

It was widely known this was not another landslide.

And its not. If the Gallinger camp can keep going and they are optimistic, optimistic about these returns.

Were coming back on eleciton night 1916 coverage stay with us.

Coming back to election night 1916, we have another projeciton.

Jacob Gallinger Wins New York

Not a surprise
Gallinger: 241        Marshall: 252        266 needed to win

That was expected, its overall a republican state and Gallinger won there tonight. We expected it.

Forty-five electoral votes from one state.

Its a big projection, but Marshall obviously can and will win without it. Connecticut, a bellwhether state in presidential elections has been undecided for hours. Its still yet to go.

Thats a state to watch. Were coming back, stay with us.

We can declare that Idaho goes to Marshall. President Marshall, in a good effort to keep his lead at this point in the night, he extends it and carries Idaho.

Thomas Marshall Wins Idaho

Gallinger: 241        Marshall: 256        266 needed to win

Okay gets more interesting by the minute.

Well listen, by the way, all of the states outstanding are interesting. I think the two biggest headline states for both sides are Connecticut and Kansas. Kansas just because thats all that Marshall needs.

The President is ten electoral votes away from reelection.

And he could get it easily with Gallinger coming close, closer than a lot of people thought he would, but it is probably just not enough.

That would be an upset of historic proportions probably. President Marshall has a fifty-six percent job approval rating.

And he leads in the popular vote nationwide, President Marshall has a sizable lead in the popular vote.

...and Rhode Island also falls to the senator tonight. Gallinger wins in Rhode Island.

Jacob Gallinger Wins Rhode Island
Gallinger: 251        Marshall: 256        266 needed to win

Compared to some other states still left outstanding, Rhode Island is like one dot on a big screen of things. Not a very big deal.

With five electoral votes, however, if this election turns out to come down to the last few electoral votes, it couild be the difference.

We are going to come over and make a major projection at this time.

BREAKING NEWS: MARSHALL WINS POPULAR VOTE
Yes, we can make a major projection now. We can now declare that President Marshall, when all of the votes are in and counted will have won the nationwide popular vote for the night. Now, the lead the President had of double digits earlier in the evening when we had state after state go to the President has dwindled down, but the President still leads by enough that we can say when all of the votes are in and counted, President Marshall will be the winner in the nationwide popular vote.

Thomas Marshall Wins Natinowide Popular Vote

And with that major projection, lets turn to our panel. Panel all still up and watching across the country and around the world, give us some insight after this major projection at this hour.

Well first of all, you have to remember, the popular vote does not determine which person wins the presidency. Thats the electoral college system, it takes 266 to win and neither candidate is there yet. However, even though the electoral vote count has tightened, President Marshall winning the popular vote is something to take pride in for him.

This was expected too and while your right the popular vote does not determine who wins the White House, it does give us an overall idea of how the country as a whole is voting.

It could also depend on where those votes are coming from. Panel, we'll start with our democratic strategist, what state are you watching the most right now?

Well obviously Kansas, only ten electoral votes are sepearted between the President and another term. However, if Kansas does end up going to Gallinger tonight, then President Marshall feels confident that Washington state, part of our western base, and the belwhether of Connecticut, still outstanding, can still come in for him.

If Marshall lost Kansas, the President would absolutely have to have both Connecticut and Washington state to stay in the race at that point.

And can I just say, this is a reflection of an interesting night, more so than what many people thought. Look at Connecticut, usually if it remains outstanding, that means democrats are favored nationally. Tonight, it was outstanding and though the President led for a long time,

and still does

And still does, even though Connecticut was undecided, this race remains a pretty close call. I think we have had the joy of watching in 1912 and 1916, even 1914 some uniquely, edge of your seat, entertaining elections. Democratic sweeps in 1912 and 1914, but now a race that was expected to be and looked that way tonight, but that now has a little bit of suspense thrown in there.

Lets turn to our republican strategist. I bet you are relieved, but what about this major projection?

Well, first of all, I agree these past couple of elections have been fascinating and I'm sure will continue to be. We are confident, knowing going into tonight that the polls did not predict another landslide for the President and that is apparant. Were still watching the numbers, done better than expected tonight.

Doing so much so that its enough to win?

Were not saying that yet, I would say cautiously optimistic at this time. Still watching Connecticut, Washington, and Kansas.

Okay, we are coming back. The President scores a win in the nationwide popular vote, electoral college vote up in the air. Stay with us, were coming back.

We came back on the air just for a minute, hold on...Kansas goes to Gallinger. Senator Gallinger has won the state of Kansas. Now, this is big news. Because for the first time tonight, for the first time tonight...

Jacob Gallinger Wins Kansas
Gallinger: 261        Marshall: 256        266 needed to win

Gallinger leads in the electoral college vote. In where we just projected that Marshall would win the nationwide popular vote, we said the electoral vote was still up in the air and boy is it ever now. Senator Gallinger wins in Kansas, this was a state that was thought to be enough to give Marshall a second term and escape what seems now to be a final drive for Gallinger. However, the night continues at least at this hour. Gallinger, senator Gallinger wins Kansas and leads in the electoral vote despite projected loosing the popular vote, Gallinger leads in the electoral vote for the first time tonight.

Were coming back, you can put another pot of coffee. Stay with us.

When you mention Connecticut being a bellwether this often, it makes it pretty much impossible not to think that Washington will go to Gallinger. Roll Eyes
