Arkansas Drops to Stevenson; North Carolina Too Close to Call
Thats right, we have another projection. Arkansas does go to Stevenson and stay in the democratic column tonight. North Carolina, a traditionally democratic state, is undecided at this time.
Adlai Stevenson Wins Arkansas
McKinley: 151 Stevenson: 69 224 needed to win
We can also declare Maryland for McKinley at this time. The state of Maryland will vote for William McKinley this election.
William McKinley Wins Maryland
McKinley: 160 Stevenson: 69 224 needed to win
Any quick comment from our panel here?
If Stevenson doesn't start gaining some ground soon, he might be done. The 9 o'clock hour is coming up with a slate of states reporting. It might be do or die for Stevenson next hour.
We are coming back at 9 o'clock. Get ready, we might have a major national projection at that hour.

Stevenson Wins Virgnia but McKinley Becomes the Next President of the United States. MCKINLEY WINS
Welcome back. As you saw there in the headline, William McKinley, we can now declare will be the 25th President of the United States.
William McKinley Wins Presidency of the United States of America
Lets go to some projections to back that up.
William McKinley Wins Kansas
Adlai Stevenson Wins Virgnia
Adlai Stevenson Wins Louisiana
William McKinley Wins Michigan
William McKinley Wins Minnesota
William McKinley Wins New York
William McKinley Wins Rhode Island
William McKinley Wins Wisconsin
William McKinley Wins Wyoming
Okay, those are our projections at this time. Enough to make McKinley the next President of the United States. He will be the next Presdient according to our projections.
McKinley: 248 Stevenson: 89 224 needed to win
And it looks like a big McKinley win tonight. As, just coming in, we can declare that McKinley will also carry the state of Nebraska. McKinley wins in Nebraska tonight.
William McKinley Wins Nebraska
McKinley: 256 Stevenson: 89 224 needed to win
I remember we said at the open that another upset for the democrats nationally might be possible, it does not seem like thats meant to be tonight.
No, McKinley has done what he couldn't do last time. He has carried some industrial swing states very easily tonight according to our projections. Illinois, Ohio, Indiana, New York. While he won a few of those last time, obviously last time didn't work, tonight its a very different story.
Has anything changed over the last four years that caused this shift in the electorate?
Well, a few things. First, you have to remember last election, 1896 was a very close election.
He nearly won last time...
He nearly won last time and it was a disappointing loss. But, hes back again tonight and is winning rather handiddly across the nation.
The question was what has changed to cause this shift.
Yes, first of all look at the closeness of the election last time. Also, while outgoing President Cleveland is personally popular with the public, his approval rating is at 28%. Thats not good for an incumbent party going into an election year. Also, I think the continuing downturn of the economy is a negative for the democrats too.
The results reflect that tonight. We will come back with more as election 1900 continues. William McKinley will be the next President of the United States succeeding retiring incumbent democrat Grover Cleveland. We are coming back. Stay with us.

10 o'clock hour
We have some more states to declare at this hour. In the state of Iowa, William McKinley will be easily carrying that state tonight. However, vice president Stevenson will be carrying the states of Montana and Nevada tonight.
William McKinley Wins Iowa
Adlai Stevenson Wins Montana
Adlai Stevenson Wins Nevada
McKinley: 269 Stevenson: 95 224 needed to win
We can also declare that William McKinley will carry the state of North Dakota. The state of Utah, at least at this hour, is undecided.
William McKinley Wins North Dakota
McKinley: 272 Stevenson: 95 224 needed to win
And one more projection, the state of Colorado, we can declare it for the vice president.

McKinley: 272 Stevenson: 99 224 needed to win
Welcome back to election night 1900. Well, it seems like the vice president been picking up some extra electoral votes tonight.
Yeah, but not very many and not where he wanted them. He would rather pick up New York, Ohio, and Illinois compared to these smaller western states that he is carrying.
McKinley lost last time and has come back to win tonight. Could we expect the same thing out of Stevenson, that he might run again in four years.
I wouldn't think so. He is loosing tonight by a pretty sizable margin and hes just not the same type of candidate as McKinley.
Hold on, Missouri drops to Stevenson. Thats a state that some people were watching tonight, though certainly not as much as others. Missouri stays in the democratic column tonight.
Adlai Stevenson Wins Missouri
McKinley: 272 Stevenson: 116 224 needed to win
Thats a good win for Stevenson and I think that the question now is, how big of a win will McKinley have. Stevenson wins a swing state there.
Of course it won't be enough to change anything, McKinley is already well over the 224 needed to win tonight. Were coming back with more. Stay with us

Utah and the West Coast Go to McKinley: Raising McKinley's Margin of Victory
Good evening again and welcome back to election night 1900. We can declare the state of Utah, previously undecided, Utah will go to McKinley tonight. Idaho drops to Stevenson but Washington, Oregon, and California all go to McKinley tonight as polls close there.
William McKinley Wins Utah
Adlai Stevenson Wins Idaho
William McKinley Wins Washington
William McKinley Wins Oregon
William McKinley Wins California
McKinley: 292 Stevenson: 119 224 needed to win
The only question now seems to be the margin of victory for McKinley tonight.
Just coming in now, we can declare the state of North Carolina for vice president Stevenson. Stevenson carries North Carolina.
Adlai Stevenson Wins North Carolina
McKinley: 292 Stevenson: 130 224 needed to win
Well the question was if McKinley could break into the democratic solid south. It seems that he cannot at least so far tonight.
Yeah, North Carolina was a target for the McKinley/Roosevelt ticket. They didn't have to win it and they didn't. Stevenson is proving that this is not a sweep for McKinley. Stevenson has lost the popular vote by a wide margin, but its not the popular vote that matters, its the electoral vote.
Thats true. They don't talk about it taking a certain number of popular votes to win, its the number of electoral votes. Stevenson is winning some states to make it a respectful showing in the electoral vote, but doing poorly in the popular vote.
Back with more election night 1900 stay with us.

Tennesee Goes Democrat...Missouri Moved Back to Undecided Column
Welcome back to election night 1900. We have a few things to tell you about. First of all, Tennessee will go to the vice president tonight and stay in the democratic column. However, Missouri, which we had previously projected for Stevenson, Missouri will move back into the undecided column.
So, Stevenson looses some electoral votes, but Tennessee will probably help him make that up. Lets look at our map now.
Adlai Stevenson Wins Tennessee
McKinley: 292 Stevenson: 125 224 needed to win
Is Missouri being taken back a surprise?
Well, no not really. Its a swing state. It probably votes democrat more than republican, but its too close to call...undecided.
We can also declare the state of Kentucky for the now President elect McKinley.
William McKinley Wins Kentucky
McKinley: 305 Stevenson: 125 224 needed to win
Missouri is in the undecided column. One more state to declare. We are coming back with that, and some final thoughts on election 1900 from our panel. Stay with us.

And our final state to declare in election 1900, Missouri goes to President elect McKinley.
William McKinley Wins Missouri
McKinley: 322 Stevenson: 124 224 needed to win
Lets turn to our panel one last time for this election.
This election result offers a new hope for the republicans with new leadership and it rejects the outgoing democratic administration.
Yeah, I think with the incumbent President not running, they lost their chance in this election. Its not even likely that Cleveland would have won had he run.
Any thoughts about the future?
I think the biggest challenge of the new administration is dealing with the economy.
This has been election night 1900. See you next time.

Why do you so often take back states and give them to the other (inevitably Republican) candidate? It really gets stale when you do it in almost every timeline.

Election Night 1904 Preview
Near the end of 1902, President McKinley ses the economy begin to improve and this leads America to an economic boom late in 1903 into 1904. President McKinley announces in February 1904 that he and vice President Roosevelt will run for a second term to their offices. There is a scare in the administration when on March 13th 1904, President McKinley is shot in New York city. However, the wound proved not to be serious and McKinley survives the attempt on his life. The assassination attempt only boosts McKinley's approval ratings as he heads into the fall election.
McKinley and Roosevelt are nominated by acclamation at the republican national convention. On the democratic side, Bill Hearst, of New York, wins the democratic nomination for President. He selects Henry Davis, of West Virgnia, as his running mate for the fall campaign. Hope is quickly dashed almost from the beginning for democrats. The McKinley/Roosevelt ticket goes into election day with a twenty-nine point lead over their democratic opponents. Its expected to be a sweep for the incumbent republican administration, but only the results will tell. Election night 1904 begins next.

McKinley Wins Three Big Swing States, Hearst Only takes Democratic Stronghold of Florida
Thats the headline of the hour, as you can se it 7 o'clock on the east coast and we have some projections.
Indiana, usually a swing state, is it tonight? Oh no, McKinley wins easily in Indiana.
William McKinley Wins Indiana
In Vermont, another traditionally republican state, the President might get as much as eighty-five percent of the vote here. A big win for the President in Vermont.
William McKinley Wins Vermont
In Virgnia, part of the traditionally democratic solid south. Is Virgnia doing that again tonight? Who can say, its undecided.
In Kentucky, this is usually a swing state, but not tonight. McKinley wins it by a solid five to seven percentage points tonight. Kentucky for the President.
William McKinley Wins Kentucky
And finally in Florida, the only good news for Hearst at this hour. A strong democratic state does it again, not sure of the margin there though. Florida stays in the democratic column tonight and goes with Hearst.

Okay, we can make another projection. President McKinley wins Delaware. Delaware for McKinley
William McKinley Wins Delaware
McKinley: 316 Hearst: 90 239 needed to win
Lets turn to our panel. You've been watching this, kinda bland election night coverage. A vast majority of the states being called as the polls close. Does this surprise you?
No not at all honestly. McKinley was strongly favored to win tonight and thats what hes doing.
Did you think he would make more inroads into the south?
I think that might be the only disappointment for the McKinley camp tonight. But, he has won a few and there are still a few out there.
Rhode Island goes to McKinley. Rhode Island for the President.
William McKinley Wins Rhode Island
McKinley: 320 Hearst: 90 239 needed to win
And that just adds to the big McKinley win tonight.
Were coming back. Stay with us.

10 o'clock hour: McKinley's Victory Margin Grows
Thats right, it is 10 o'clock on the east coast and we have some more projections to tell you about. First in Iowa, democrats thought they might have a chance there too, but its not to be. McKinley wins it.
William McKinley Wins Iowa
Also in Idaho, McKinley wins there.
William McKinley Wins Idaho
In Montana, McKinley wins it there.
Its not that the President is getting high percentages in these states necessaryily, but Mr. Hearst is getting such low percentages, giving us the opprotunity to declare these for the President.
William McKinley Wins Montana
Diddo in Nevada, McKinley wins there.
William McKinley Wins Nevada
In Utah, its McKinley. Utah goes for the President.
William McKinley Wins Utah
And a big big win for McKinley in North Dakota. North Dakota definently going for the President tonight by almost four to one. Wow, North Dakota for the President.
William McKinley Wins North Dakota
Lets see where that puts us on our electoral map. We know that William McKinley has been reelected to the presidency and is starting to build up a little bit of a margin here.
McKinley: 349 Hearst: 90 239 needed to win
Yeah, and this isn't a surprise. Hearst was never expected to win anyway. He seemed to just run for the sake of it.
I think with the economy booming, the President surviving an assassiantion attempt, the President's high popularity, and the fact that the democrats nominated a weak candidate. All of those factors combined give us the result that we have tonight.
Were coming back. Stay with us.
