Turner will still get less than 40%. Why wouldn't he? He's not going to raise any money.

Ah, but he's the bestest candidate that ever there was. And perhaps also magical, whichever seems better.

Turner seems like a class act kind of guy. Is that the case?
Regarding the "anti-Semetic" judge, I think what she was trying to do was be even handed, jettisoning one Pub seat and one Dem seat. Hinchey's silly CD needed to go upstate in any non partisan map (at least that was the most obvious thing to do), so that left a Pub seat to ax in the NYC area. The most "axable" was Turner's. I don't think Mann hates either Jews or, in particular, white Catholics, who actually dominated Turner's CD rather than Jews. I just don't.
If the judge had axed Buerkle upstate, then presumably the Catholic-Jewish seat in Brooklyn Queens would have remained. In my universe, I prefer to find a reasonable, and principled, explanation for what one does, if one is available, as opposed to assuming that someone is a bigot. And a reasonable non-bigtoed explanation is available here. I just don't think that it is very fair to folks to label them bigots myself absent compelling reasons to do so.
any fair map would give Southern Brooklyn it's own seat.
I agree if there were no other constraints, which is why my map did. However, I read Judge Mann's recommendation and it was clear that since VRA section 5 applied to Brooklyn, the recommendation is designed to change the minority districts in as little a way as possible. In particular she stressed that there should be no retrogression. My map cut up Velasquez' district, which she felt she could not do.
There was a orthodox supplied map that kept all 3 voting rights act districts and gave Southern Brooklyn it's own seat.
Yes, but the judge view the map as starting with 1 Hispanic majority seat and 3 pluralities, and moved it to 2 majorities (1 slim) and 2 strong pluralities. A map like mine with a south Brooklyn district had 3 Hispanic majority districts, but no other plurality district.

If one was so inclined, one could route the Brooklyn black districts into the Upper East Side and Astoria and remove Maloney's district, and perhaps route Nydia Velazquez under the black districts rather than over them.
Of course when you have 11 Democratic districts, 10 seats, and 4 black districts, and the Hispanics also want 4 districts, well, the math fails to work out.

I don't know much about New York politics, but isn't Bob Turner a sane version of Carl Paladino? As in, ultra-conservative to the point of making other conservatives uncomfortable? I don't see how he has a chance of winning.

I know just about as many of the details as you do, but apparently he's adamantly against privatizing Medicare, and has come out against both parties' healthcare plans. By contrast, however, he also made an extremely late entry into the crowd of douchebags rallying against the "Ground Zero Mosque".
Make of those what you will.

By New York standards, he pretty much is, but as NVTownsend rightly points out he's not quite in Steve King or Louie Gohmert territory.

Other names thrown around by politicos musing haphazardly on the topic to The Politicker include Councilman Mark Weprin, Assemblyman and former Congressional candidate David Weprin, Councilwoman Liz Crowley, and on down the list of elected officials throughout the district.
Liz Crowley is Joe Crowley's cousin.
