Apparus avec l’émergence de la modernité politique, les termes de « gauche » et de « droite » sont depuis lors omniprésents dans la plupart des démocraties occidentales. C’est pourquoi le clivage gauche-droite apparaît aujourd’hui comme une composante naturelle de tout système partisan en démocratie.



I Le pouvoir politique se légitime par la référence à un ordre naturel et religieux


   1) Dans les sociétés traditionnelles, les règles du groupe sont sacralisées
   
1.   Dans ces sociétés, le pouvoir est considéré comme une force qu’il convient de canaliser : l’ensemble complexe d’interdits et de prescriptions qui s’impose sur ces sociétés poursuit ce but.
2.   C’est pourquoi le chef n’a pas de pouvoir véritable : c’est un « pouvoir non contraignant » qui se borne à rappeler les codes de la société.
3.   Il en résulte que l’individu est entièrement soumis au pouvoir, car sa socialisation dépend du respect des règles.


2) En occident, l’émergence de l’Etat moderne se fonde sur une légitimation d’ordre religieux
   
1.   Les penseurs chrétiens de l’Antiquité et du Moyen-âge (Saint Augustin, Thomas d’Aquin) affirment que le pouvoir politique provient du pouvoir divin.
2.   Tout au long du Moyen-âge, l’Eglise catholique affirme sa supériorité sur le pouvoir temporel.
3.   A partir du XVIIème siècle, les monarchies européennes s’émancipent de la tutelle de l’Eglise tout en conservant la légitimité religieuse. La pouvoir monarchique se veut alors le représentant direct de Dieu : c’est la monarchie de droit divin.


3) Les théoriciens conservateurs légitiment l’ordre social par la référence à la nature
   
La « métaphore corporelle » est une vision de la société très fréquente dans l’histoire occidentale. Elle assimile la société à un organisme vivant, dont le fonctionnement est assuré par la cohésion entre

Sectional and Race Agitation

The race question has brought countless woes to this country. The calm wisdom of the American people should see to it that it brings no more.

To revive the dead and hateful race and sectional animosities in any part of our common country means confusion, distraction of business, and the reopening of wounds now happily healed. North, South, East and West have but recently stood together in line of battle from the walls of Pekin to the hills of Santiago, and as sharers of a common glory and a common destiny, we should share fraternally the common burdens.

We therefore deprecate and condemn the Bourbon-like selfish, and narrow spirit of the recent Republican Convention at Chicago which sought to kindle anew the embers of racial and sectional strife, and we appeal from it to the sober common sense and patriotic spirit of the American people.
