On a normal week, at least once a week, as my school has it as part of their mass uniform.
I know Catholic schools often require Mass attendance during the week (don't see the point in that really since supposedly you'd be going on Sunday anyway but whatever), but they make you wear a tie to it? Wow! Considering only olds would wear a tie to church normally.

Tie. Mainly because I have a big boy job, and I'm an adult.
Apparently wearing ties make one a condescending asshole! I suppose if I worked as a waiter at a 'fancy' restaurant I'd be arrogant too.
I wear band shirts more than ties. Maybe half of my T's are band shirts, the other half are just random "funny" stuff (like the one I'm wearing right now...it's says "Punking Rock Extra Plowed" but it looks like the label on a Rolling Rock bottle. It's one of the few shirts I've owned more than once as the last one became too faded.) I only wear a tie when somebody dies, and even then, i usually don't.

Their function is to hang around and be constantly useful as a goad. The ultimate aim is not such humane small potatoes as repatriating refugees.

I don't have any band shirts. I'd probably look goth or something if I did... lol
I have to wear a tie for work. They're uncomfortable and I'm bad at putting them on. Oh well.

Would kids wear a polo and kakhis to school normally either? It's called a uniform. I'll be soldiers, had they never joined the military, probably wouldn't be normally wearing a US Army uniform. Uniforms aren't meant to be normal.

I wore a tie and blazer everyday in high school. I loved it and it was only irritating if it got really hot.
The dress was moot for me but Mass was offered several times a day at my HS. We had a nice chapel and Id go from time to time at lunch. Going to church doesnt necessarily have to be a once and done thing.
Anyway, tie.

Tie. Mainly because I have a big boy job, and I'm an adult.
One of the supervisors at my job wears band shirts as frequently as I do and the only people who ever wear ties, including the management, are people who are obviously doing the whole "wearing a tie 'ironically'" hipster thing.
What kind of place do you work in? What does your company do?

Ah, okay. I'm out selling between 200 to 400 thousand dollars worth of gas and oil rig equipment a month. I doubt they would buy anything from me if I were wearing a band shirt. They tend to not like that guy.

I work at a law firm and I'm not required to wear a tie. Does this count as a "big boy job"?

If you're allowed to wear a band shirt to work, I'd say no.

It should, of course, be acknowledged that a majority of ties are objectively horrible. The great advantage of wearing ones made from the objectively correct material (other than the obvious) is the fact that you don't actually notice that you're wearing one.
Anyways, for a surreal variation on the question perhaps someone should ask about bow ties or cravats? The cravat, of course, being an item of clothing that unites both the laughable dandy and a miner c. 1910.

If your tie hurts or you "notice you're wearing it" (
) then you've not tied it correctly or, more probably, your shirt doesn't fit.

Most ties are too heavy, or so I think. Possible that I'm just mindlessly fussy.

Just because the two symptoms often appear together doesn't necessarily mean one is causative. I'd say its more likely that the rear-opening you mention is more likely to get the 'big boy job', due to privileges (the same ones that made him a backside-apperture-type).
Thus, the disagreeable personality, the 'big boy job', and the tie are all symptoms of our oppressive capitalist society, dead0man, none causative, but all telling.

I've never worn either in my life. I am open to wearing a tie when required by the situation, though.

I'll occasionally wear a tie when going out to a bar or club, though not often. I don't own a band shirt. My wife has an AC/DC tank top, though she's not a fan so it's ironic I guess.

Tie. I don't wear one every day for work, sometimes just a nice long-sleeved shirt and a sweater vest. Tarocash has some nice workwear (and makes up almost all my casual wardrobe), and I wear that when I don't have meetings and things (probably just under half of my work days). The other half of my workdays I wear a suit. I often am complimented on my ties (I tend to be fussy in choosing them and have some really nice ones). I was complimented a few times yesterday on my tie, actually (have a conference this weekend which requires a suit). I haven't worn a band shirt in probably a decade? I don't think I have any in my wardrobe any more.

I'm not referring just to school uniforms, though everyone knows what I think of them (and it's not positive). But requiring a tie just one day a week for Mass implies that the school is treating this differently and requiring beyond the standard uniform, which is pretty ridiculous and an idea about 50 years old.

I've gone to church more than once in some weeks, including last week (if you caught my bit about going to my cousin's first communion a week ago), and to one a few times in the afternoon where I know the people involved, but Cathcon's post seemed to imply that it's mandatory which is quite different. I know lots of Christian universities have chapels and all that are open through the week but usually don't require attendance.

We had an old give the sermon this morning. And not just any old, the outgoing national director of the Vineyard Association USA (Yes seriously!) I think this might be the first time in the church's history someone over 40 has given the sermon. And he wasn't wearing a tie or was particularly dressed up. So even not all olds adhere to these dress standards, and they are quite bizarre. Cathcon's school sounds like a weird place.
