Holocaust denial is off because the person is likely a troll, so they'll be banned anyway. I left threatening another poster with violence on there, but only as long as the threat is credible.

The first one, the whole bit about violence, I believe is self-explanatory.  I mean really, I don't think it makes any sense to keep a poster on here if they show a tendency to throw death threats at people.

Spamming/Flooding is just a downright hateful action with little to no regard to individual persons.  Sure, slurs are real hurtful but they aren't an all out assault on sanity like a poster who outright spams the Atlas.

Pornography..........like violence this is a no brainer.  I mean really, there will probably be elementary or middle school kids looking at this site.  Hell, some public school teachers might even be looking at it.  The last thing we need is for this forum to become "Politics and OMG HOT TITS!"  In my mind, the "Hot Girls" and "Hot Guys" threads are enough to tide the casual user on here over.  You want hardcore sex?  You want naked boobies?  Well then go to freeones.com, don't bring it on here.

Graphic images (ie, stuff you would see in a hard "R" rated movie), this is a political discussion forum, not a Rambo forum.  If you really feel it is relevant to the discussion then put a disclaimer up and a link, don't directly post it onto the website as an image.

In my mind these four should probably be bannable offenses.

Here and there is fine, but multiple times (making it your entire character as a poster) is bannable.

Pretty much never, but encourage restraint.

Should be bannable offenses: Threats, spam, plagiarism, and sock accounts.

I'll also add: Anything that could place the site in legal jeopardy, e.g. posting pornographic images.

The ignore feature (along with ridicule, including what many here would term "personal attacks") is the best response to most other actions listed in the OP.

Other rules that should be heavily encouraged:

1. Be truthful.
2. Don't whine about other posters being "rude."
3. Don't whine about the moderators or attack them over how they perform their duties.
4. Use proper English.
5. Title your topics meaningfully. (Don't be like the asshole who started a thread called "2012" on the 2012 Congressional Elections board.)
6. Avoid grudges. (I'm bad with this one. Practically anything posted by Politico, nh/azmagic, or Zarn sends me into a frothing rage.)

"Don't whine" hardly precludes all criticism.

But a major "lol" at the idea that forum moderators have "absolute power." Let's not delude ourselves. They're a group of unpaid volunteers charged with interpreting and enforcing the terms of service. Their actions are constrained by Dave (when present), the ToS, each other (they're hardly a monolithic body), and community norms.

Most other forums I post at all allow socks as long as they are funny and not used for trolling or malicious purposes. However there has been a grand total of one possible sock on Atlas that has been the slightest bit amusing (The Professor) and hordes of stupid trolls and downright pathetic attempts at humor (johnnyboy and of course Larry T being painfully unfunny), so I don't mind a stricter standard here.

Only offenses against the GTC should lead to a dissolution of contract.

Having one or more sock accounts is not a contradiction of the GTC, particularly if you falsely consider accounts created after a(n unjustified) banning as "socks".

I cant see why it is relevant if holocaust denial involves violence. Holocaust denial is extremely hurtfull in itself if you have relatives that perished in the gas chambers, it doesn't matter if there is some kind of reference to violence in the statement. The holocaust was in itself one giant act of violence.
All in all I don't understand this fixation on threats, that a lot of you seem to have.
A lot of expressions of racism, sexism and homophobia that don't involve threats can be just as hurtfull as the ones that do. Personally I couldn't care less if I am threatened on the internet, since the chance of some random guy in Oklahoma (or whereever) actually harming me is next to nil.

All in all I don't understand this fixation on threats, that a lot of you seem to have.

It probably comes down to many (most) of the people on this site being absolutely obsessed with aspects of US governance and familiarity with the US free speech legal tradition (in which "fighting words" like "I'm going to kill you now" are one of the few exceptions to freedom of speech).  Needless to say, the rules on this site are not based on that legal tradition, but it influences a lot of the American mindset.

The Professor's IP is legitimate, not a proxy, and doesn't match any current posters.  It's possible (almost definite) that he's a gimmick account, but I don't think he's a sock.
