How many votes can this get the Tories. They seem to be getting back on track after a shaky(to say the least) few months, but apparently they need to do more.

It'll probably turn off more voters than it brings back... this is basically policies by knee jerk (and introduced by one: Mr Oliver Letwin!)...

The sums don't add up and some of the stuff they want to scrap is needed and is working (eg. New Deal), but if all they want to do is rally the Blue Rinse Brigade...

No doubt the NHS will continue to be "safe in their hands". I really think the Tories must think the electorate are stupid......They have not understood that the British electorate no longer believe that they can have tax cuts and better public services.

IMO, if the Tories are to be ever re-elected as a government (and I think this is some years away yet), they have to come to the electorate with a plausible story. Yes we can have tax cuts if we privatise the health service and cut social security. At least then there is a difference between the parties and the Tories can fight to justify their platform.

BTW I am not advocating privatising the NHS......

Yes, because less tax means less welfare state. And most of the middle class gains almost nothing with tax cuts.

In Switzerland (May 16th), 66% of the population refused by referendum a tax cut, which was however supported by all the parties of the Right.

I guess Portugal must be a very special place in Europe then, because I'm yet to meet someone who thinks tax hikes are good. Some realize they are needed to stop the deficit from getting bigger, but few like them(and no one would promise them). Also, in Portugal 80% of IRS income comes from people who make more than 22600€, so the middle class gains from it.
