I try to maintain a positive opinion of him, and imagine that he is a pretty decent guy, but thus far have failed to find any posts of his much to my liking. Perhaps this is just a matter of unfamiliarity?

Probably not. He rarely posts anything orginial or of value; all he does is call other people out over obscure points.
