Introducing Part II of Phase III of the Policy Review:
Hot-Button Cultural Issues
Religion in Public Life
It is the position of the Christian Democratic Party that acknowledging the existence of God in public life is not tantamount to the establishment of a state church, and that our laws are derived at least in part from the Holy Bible. As such, we support the right of judges to erect the Ten Commandments on government property, and the right of faith-based organizations like [http://www.habitat.org Habitat for Humanity] and the [http://www.salvationarmyusa.org/usn/www_usn.nsf Salvation Army] -among others- to receive government funding so they could better be able to help those most in need. We affirm our support for religious displays (of any faith) on public property during holidays, and a restoration of tax-exempt status for religiously-affiliated colleges and universities regardless of their policies.
Abortion
The Christian Democratic Party supports the current status of the regulation of abortion as a regional right, and will oppose any steps taken to federalize the issue. We support a ban on all abortions conducted after the first trimester except in the instance of a severe threat to the mother's life. We believe common sense legislation on parental notification, spousal notification, and fetal protection from violence should be encouraged and introduced on the regional level.
Gun Control
The Christian Democratic Party believes that we should follow the constitutional principle that gun rights are protected by the Constitution. We believe that all regions should adopt concealed-carry laws, laws protecting gun manufacturers from unfounded lawsuits, and laws emphasizing the legality of gun ownership at all times. We do support restrictions on gun ownership by those who have committed a felony and support common sense measures to give citizens the freedom to protect themselves and their families.
Affirmative Action
This Party strongly opposes any form of affirmative action used by either the federal or regional governments as it is discriminatory.
Death Penalty and the Criminal Justice System
The Christian Democratic Party supports the death penalty only in the most egregious of circumstances like treason, terrorism, and especially heinous homicides in the first degree.
And, in addition, the entire criminal justice system should be overhauled since in too many cases, poor defendants rarely have good lawyers appointed to them, which likely contributes to the phenomenon of having innocents mistakenly put on death row and executed. Money and celebrity are often the best way to ensure that criminal defendants get at least adequate representation, and this is a tendency that should be corrected so as to ensure that no matter how poor and obscure you are, the quality of the lawyer that is appointed for you would be no different than that of a lawyer working on behalf of celebrities like O.J. Simpson, Michael Jackson, or white collar criminals like Ken Lay and Jeffrey Skilling.
Embryonic Stem-Cell Research
The Christian Democratic Party believes that no stone should be left unturned in finding life-saving cures to seemingly incurable diseases, and so therefore supports embryonic stem cell research both in the private sphere, as well as that funded by government. While we are open to alternative sources for stem cells, until they prove as scientifically viable as embryo-derived stem cells (and the scientific and medical community gives its collective approval), the Christian Democratic Party will not under any circumstances support limiting the amount of embryo-derived stem cells that scientists can work on, or banning their use altogether.
Euthanasia/Physician-Assisted Suicide
It is the position of the Christian Democratic Party that euthanasia and physician-assisted suicide should both be banned except in the case of a Living Will. Without a Living Will, there is no way to determine if a person wished to remain living or to be euthanized. In determining whether a person desires life or death, in cases of uncertainty it is better that we err on the side of life.
Gay Marriage and Gay Adoption
Marriage is between a man and a woman, therefore the Christian Democratic Party opposes all efforts to legalize gay marriage, and we oppose gay adoption as we believe it is absolutely essential to the child's well-being that he or she grows up with a father and a mother. However, we do believe civil unions are a viable option for same-sex couples so long as they are not given the title of 'marriage', and we support their right not to be discriminated against on the basis of their sexual orientation when seeking employment, visiting their loved ones in the hospital, and jointly filing for insurance, among others.
Please feel free to propose any changes to the above planks for debate and, subsequent vote at the Convention

In
red
is my proposed revision, in addition to the fact that I am deleting the last portion of the first sentence stating that we oppose gay adoption:
Gay Marriage and Gay Adoption
Marriage is between a man and a woman, therefore the Christian Democratic Party opposes all efforts to legalize gay marriage
, and we oppose gay adoption as we believe it is absolutely essential to the child's well-being that he or she grows up with a father and a mother
. However, we do believe civil unions are a viable option for same-sex couples so long as they are not given the title of 'marriage', and we support their right not to be discriminated against on the basis of their sexual orientation when seeking employment, visiting their loved ones in the hospital,
adopting children
, and jointly filing for insurance, among others.

The ballot to decide which candidates the Christian Democratic Party has decided to endorse, in the forthcoming district senate elections, has closed. Votes have been counted and I've requested that the Party Whip Senator Virginian87 double-check them

Fezzyfestoon has asked me as Chairman if he can use the organization of our party platform as a template for that of the AFRNC. I have granted permission, after liasing with Frodo, that he can
He has assured me that he will only be using for the purposes of structuring the AFRNC platform
So don't be alarmed if you see a AFRNC platform emerge that looks like ours because it won't be

From Annapolis, Maryland:
Good afternoon,
Of late, there seems to have been some movement towards a return to "two-party" politics in Atlasia, namely that of the Atlasia Forum Democratic Party [AFDNC] and the Atlasia Forum Republican Party [AFRNC]
I have no problem whatsoever with this but I'm of the conviction that if Atlasia is to dominated, and I'd rather it wasn't, by the AFDNC and AFRNC then I think it's important, in the event, that they be "big tent" parties spanning the ideological spectrum
Myself and others within the Christian Democratic Party had either jumped to the AFDNC or were considering jumping to the AFDNC
However, as far as we Christian Democrats go, it is important that we remember that our party comprises real-life Democrats, Republicans and Independents, who are communitarian in their philosophy. At the end of the day, the AFDNC would not be a suitable home for all Christian Democrats any more than the AFRNC would be
Furthermore, I have my concerns as to whether the AFDNC would become dominated by uber-left liberal doves - totally out of sync with the core values of the Christian Democratic Party
The Christian Democratic Party is broadly left-of-center to center on economics; center-right to center on social issues and committed to strong defense
While it is true that our membership has depleted of late
, the Christian Democratic continues to be a major player in Atlasian politics in that we currently have one regional governor (Frodo) and three senators (myself, WMS and Virginian87). Furthermore, we have the most comprehensive platform of any existing political party
Therefore, I urge that all members of the Christian Democratic stay exactly where they are
. Indeed, I reach out to those of you, who are Independents, but broadly share our values to come and join us
Thank you
