Good point and the chances of Buncombe voting Republican again anytime soon are very slim

Which isn't saying much, since it isn't.

Asheville doesn't vote for Bush. The suburbs do. By a lot.

So, why do the liberal hippies of Asheville vote for Bush?

Kerry won Asheville city, 60% to 39%.  Bush landslided the rest of the county (not so much suburbs as satellite towns).  I'm not sure I'd call a >1/3 black city that gave Kerry 60% "hippie," but it's liberal.

Anyone know much about Swannanoa?  It's a small town outside of Asheville that voted Kerry.  It's heavily white, but seems identical to the other parts of the county where Bush landslided.  It was a close victory (carried by one of three precincts) though.

About of third of Buncombe's population is in Asheville, so if the city turnout is on par with the county turnout, Bush would have won Buncombe by around 11%, since he won the county by only 0.6%.

I'm not sure I'd call a >1/3 black city that gave Kerry 60% "hippie," but it's liberal.

Huh

According to Census Factfinder, Asheville's black population is 14.8%.

Oops.  Did a ZIP code instead of the city as a whole...sorry nclib, you're right.

I thought Asheville had a huge University, but according to Wikipedia, University of NC-Asheville only has 3,600 undergraduates, not enough to make it a university town like Pullman or Lawrence, KS. There is a community college in Asheville that has 9,000 students though.

I wouldn't describe any county that voted for Bush as "liberal," but, just to play along, I suppose Latah County in Idaho might be a candidate.

I'm surprised no one else figured out Earl's point with that list.

Hint: Go look at how those counties actually voted.

I did, from memory...I just assumed most people did too, so I didn't bother pointing it out.

Latah wins I think. Lots of Democratic Indians, college kids, and working class poor voters.

Latah barely has any Indians at all...they barely outnumber blacks.

Are you sure it has any? A lot of those supposed "Indians" are really just white guys trying to get attention.

I'm not sure how rampant Census fudging is, but I think the vast, vast majority of people are honest.

And, yes, I'm relatively sure that such a populous county in the Pacific Northwest will have at least one Indian.

Warren Wilson college is located there, a small school of about 900 students  The precinct Kerry did win he won by 41, while the two he lost were 12 & 28.  Fact finder is down so can't match the precinct up right now, but more than likely the Precinct Kerry won is the one where the college is located, and the school probably makes up a large amount of the precinct's votes.
