Anybody seen any polls for Brisbane?

Anybody know how things are looking on the Gold Coast, where the Liberals are running an openly Liberal ticket for the first time?

For an update - looks like the incumbent (Independent) Mayor on the Gold Coast was returned.

In Brisbane, the Liberals picked up a number of wards, won the Mayoralty with 60% of the Primary vote and almost won the Labor leader's ward in Council. The safest ward was Pullenvale, where the Liberals polled almost 75% of the Primary vote and over 80% of the 2PP. Reminds me of the line in Jeffrey Archer's "First Among Equals" where the wife of a Tory MP comments of her husband's comfortable election, "In Sussex, the Conservative vote isn't counted, dear, it's weighed."

The line was, IIRC, originally about the Labour vote in Yorkshire mining constituencies, some of which were ridiculously oversized. All were (and are) ridiculously safe.

Anyway.

Mapses?

I've done up a really, really rough JPG one, just showing the results (but not the margins in most cases).

How do I upload it?

It shows seats retained by Labor in red, two seats held by Labor by <1% (so could theoretically flip with postals, but highly unlikely) in pink, seats retained by Liberals in navy blue, seats picked up by the Liberals in blue and a single seat where the lead is currently Liberal by <1% - or about 100 votes (and could still flip - I'm not sure how many postals are left to count) in light blue.

The results are available here: http://www.ecq.qld.gov.au/elections/local/lg2008/BrisbaneCity/results/councillor/summary.html

You can upload it in the gallery. The linky to the gallery is up on the top bar (with polls, predictions, search, profile etc.). From there go in maps, scroll down to the bottom and there is a link to add an image.

Alternatively, you could use imageshack to host the image and post the url here.

Cheers, guys!

I have a whole batch of ones from the 2006 State Election in Victoria, too... I'll upload those at some point.

Let's see if this works...

I'll try to do some decent ones during this week to show margins, etc. Pullenvale (80% Liberal) is the very large ward on the western outskirts of the municipality. I grew up in the Labor-held ward in the south-east corner of the municipality.

Hard to believe that Brisvegas Mayor Campbell Newman is the highest ranking state Liberal in the whole of the country. And I doubt that will change anytime soon.

What are the populations of the Liberal wards compared to the ALP wards?

There has just been a redistribution, so they're actually fairly similarly sized presently.

City-wide, the Lord Mayor received 60% of the Primary vote.

I'll double check the sizes of the wards for you and post again a bit later.

Okay, just did the calculations...

I'll give the aggregate figures first and then give you each ward's enrollment population.

The enrollment figures are as at the date the rolls closed in the lead-up to the election. The vote figures are based on the 2PP results. Because Queensland state and local elections use optional preferential voting, a vote remains formal as long as there is a preference allocated. A greens voter, for example, may wish to just vote for the Greens, or may allocate a preference. This means that the 2PP figures may not necessarily sum too close to the enrollment figures. Also note that while voting in this election was compulsory, it seems that in some wards, turnout may have been low by Australian standards.

Votes cast for Liberal Councillors: 254,748 (57.18%)
Votes cast for Labor Councillors: 190,780 (42.82%)
(These figures don't include votes that expired due to optional preferential)

Average enrollment per ward (Mean): 25,429.5
Average enrollment per ward (Median): 25,426
Enrollment per ward (Range): 23,680 (Macgregor, Lib) - 27,188 (Central, Labor)

Average enrollment per Liberal ward (Mean): 25,374.81
Average enrollment per Labor ward (Mean): 25,517.00

The Gap             LIB RETAIN    Lib 10,980 (68.82%)     ALP 4,942 (31.18%) Enrollment: 24932
Toowong           LIB RETAIN    Lib 8,341 (62.05%)       ALP 5,101 (37.95%) Enrollment: 24859
Walter Taylor     LIB RETAIN    Lib 11,859 (71.66%)     ALP 4,690 (28.34%) Enrollment: 25431
Wishart              LIB GAIN       Lib 9,923 (62.7%)        ALP 5,903 (37.3%)    Enrollment: 24978
Wynnum Manly  ALP RETAIN   Lib 6,896 (40.61%)      ALP 10,086 (59.39%) Enrollment: 25118

While I've classified Wishart as a Lib Gain and Macgregor as a Lib Retain, Macgregor is a new ward, however it takes in much of the old Wishart and the sitting Councillor for Wishart contested Macgregor. For this reason, I've classified Macgregor as the continuing ward. Tennyson took in half of the old Walter Taylor and also the more Liberal parts of the old Dutton Park Ward (most of Dutton Park went to the new ward of The Gabba).

Is the ward actually known as The Gabba, or as Wooloongabba?

It's actually called "The Gabba" - not Wooloongabba.

Strange... but true...
