Senator Walter Mondale states "We're going to keep pushing hard to win this nomination in 1988.  Let's move forward and continuing our fight against Senator Kennedy."

Kennedy tells his supporters "Senator Mondale isn't going to get the nomination.  We're going to never give up until the end."

On the Republican side, Senator Howard Baker states "I have the best feeling in the world that I'm going to be the Republican nominee in 1988."

Senator Dole tells his supporters "We're not giving up without a fight.  Let's make sure we keep winning states here in and out."

Jack Kemp is thinking about dropping out of the race soon.  "I can't see how I can win the nomination this year with only over a month left in the primary season."

He says he will make an official announcement before Nebraska and West Virginia vote on May 10th.  Whoever he endorses could have a big impact as far as delegates.  Both Baker and Dole camps want to meet with Kemp to discuss an endorsement.

On May 8th Jack Kemp announces he will drop out of the race.  Dole and Baker camps call Kemp's campaign to discuss endorsements before he drops out.

Congressman Jack Kemp

"Americans, today I've decided to drop out of the race for President in 1988.  I made my decision over the past few days.  This is a hard thing to do but it must be done as I have no chance at getting the nomination.  Therefore I throw my full support to Senator Howard Baker of Tennessee.  He's a very good person for the job and he's worked well with both sides of the aisle.  Well, thanks and God Bless America."

Dole camp states "We're shocked at the endorsement of Senator Baker."

With just 55 delegates between Mondale and Kennedy, I expect Hart to become the all-powerful king-maker.

Kennedy goes to the remaining states and tells them "On June 7th you can make a difference in this campaign by nominating me as the Democratic candidate this year."

Mondale tells everyone "California is a must win state for our campaign."

Then, Hart tells his supporters "In these remaining weeks I will need your support to win a state."

On the Republican side, Baker tells supporters "In a couple weeks I will be the official Republican nominee in 1988."

Dole says "That's not going to happen as long as I'm in the race." (reffering to Baker's comment).

Former President Stassen goes out on the campaign trail for Dole.  He tells Dole's supporters "Senator Dole is the better of the two candidates running for the Republican nomination.  President Landon would've been proud to see Dole get this far."

Bush says "Americans, Senator Baker is the best candidate for the Republicans this year.  He will bring both parties together as President and get alot accomplished as President in office."

Get ready for the June 7th primaries.

Final words from the campaigns before the June 7th primaries:

Kennedy: "Let's get ready to rumble on June 7th."

Mondale: "Senator Kennedy won't get this nomination that fast.  I'm going to get the nomination and June 7th will be the day."

Hart: "Alright everyone.  June 7th is almost here.  Let's shake up this race."

Baker: "Senator Dole isn't going to beat me tomorrow."

Dole: "All 4 states on June 7th will make a difference for our campaign.  Let's win California.  Thank you."

BREAKING NEWS: Senator Gary Hart endorses Senator Walter Mondale for the Democratic nomination.
Senator Walter Mondale

Mondale tells his supporters "Tonight I've won more delegates than Senator Kennedy as Senator Hart endorsed me earlier.  However I'm still over 100 delegates shy of having the nomination.  Therefore I will keep fighting Ted Kennedy as long as he wants to fight."

Total Dem delegates:
Mondale-1,899 delegates
Kennedy-1,484 delegates

Over the next few days some superdelegates decide to go over to Mondale.  On June 17th Senator Walter Mondale is declared the Democratic nominee for President.

Ted Kennedy is disappointed that he didn't get the nomination but ends up supporting Mondale and decides to do what he can do to elect him.  Mondale thanks Kennedy for a great race for President.  "Senator Kennedy is a good man and a great giant in the history of the United States of America.  I salute you Senator.  Great race Mr. Kennedy."

Poll for President:
Mondale 48%
Baker 45%
Undecided 5%
Other 2%

Mondale is happy with the numbers but still is very cautious about it.  He will make his running mate choice soon.

Senator Baker hinted that he might choose Congressman Jack Kemp.

Meanwhile, President Bush starts campaigning for Baker saying "He's the best man for the job.  He will make a great President.  We can't afford a Democrat in the White House.  With Howard Baker we're sure of victory."

On July 1, 1988 Mondale announces his running mate will be: Senator Gary Hart of CO.  "Senator Hart is a good man.  He stands for a lot of things I stand for and that's why I chose him to run with me."

A few days later Baker announces his running mate will be: Congressman Jack Kemp.  "Congressman Kemp is a great politician.  He's done some great things including working with Democrats in Congress."

Senator Kennedy states "I'm going to do my best to see Senator Mondale elected President in 1988.  He will be better fitted as President compared with Senator Baker would be."

Kennedy campaigns across the country for Mondale before the convention.

Up next: The Democratic Convention.

Democratic National Convention, 1988:

The keynote speaker at the convention is Senator Kennedy.  He tells the delegates "Democrats, let's continue forward with Senator Mondale and Senator Hart at the helm.  We need a Democrat in the White House now and this November we can show everyone that."

On the second to last night, Senator Hart states "Both Senator Mondale and I will bring a better American than we've seen under President Bush.  Under a Mondale/Hart administration you will have lower taxes, more education funding, etc.  Thank you."

Finally, Senator Mondale tells everyone "Well, it's nice to be at this point in a campaign.  I promise to have America better than we've seen it in a long time.  I plan to fight for the common person and their interests.  The Republicans won't listen to your problems but I will.  Thank you."
