Powell 49%

Mondale goes across the country saying "Americans can't afford another Republican administration.  They gave tax cuts to the rich and taxed the poor more.  That's not right.  If you make only a little amount of money you deserve to not have to pay as much on your taxes as the rich have.  Another accomplishment of this administration is avoiding involvemnet with the Iraq/Kuwait issue as they solved it themselves."

Speaker of the House Tom Foley decides to get votes to revise the Electoral College.  "Our electoral system isn't the best and I believe that we need to go just by popular vote instead of Electoral Votes."

People in Rhode Island and other smaller states aren't sure this would be a good idea.

In the Presidential polls Powell's leading Mondale 50%-47% with 3% undecided.  In a poll against Dole, Mondale's ahead of him 51%-45% while 4% is undecided.

A ballot initiative for Puerto Rico statehood is officially on the General Election ballot in Puerto Rico.

President Mondale says "Depending on the outcome we may have 51 states.  If they decide to remain a Commonwealth then I still would like Congress to give them Electoral Votes."  Privately Democrats would like to see an earlier vote but in the end decide to support it on the November ballot.

Senator Dole states "Americans, if Pennsylvania doesn't support me I may drop out of the race afterwords."

Speaker Foley brings up the Electoral College Reform Act of 1992 to the floor of the House in mid April.  This bill would get rid of the Electoral College and have a popular vote.  President Mondale states "This is a great bill being brought before Congress."

There are protests saying they should keep the Electoral College.  Foley states "Some people just hate change."

The Electoral College Reform Act of 1992 passes 230-205.  Senate Majority Leader George Mitchell says he will schedule a vote on the bill sometime in May.

Pennsylvania: April 28th

Republican: 91 delegates
Powell 53%-48 delegates
Dole 37%-34 delegates
Buchanan 10%-9 delegates

The next day Bob Dole decides to drop out of the race and endorse Colin Powell.  "I can't win the Republican nomination at this point therefore I must drop out and endorse General Colin Powell for President.  He's the best person for the party in November to defeat the President."

Republican delegates so far:
Powell-1,041 delegates
Buchanan-98 delegates

On May 2nd, Senate Majority Leader George Mitchell introduces the Electoral College Overhaul Act of 1992.  In the Senate's version the change in the Electoral College would take place over the next 8 years with each state dropping out of it each year from November 1992-November 2000.  The Senate votes 57-43.

Now the House has to vote on the Senate bill as it had passed another bill.

Meanwhile, Pat Buchanan drops out of the race and endorses Colin Powell for President.

It looks as if the Democrats won't lose the Senate this fall.  Can the Republicans win 3 seats this fall at least in the Senate?

President Mondale states "Having 62 Democrats in the Senate is a great accomplishment.  We haven't seen these numbers since President Humphrey."

Now, onto the campaign with President Walter Mondale vs. General Colin Powell.

The House ends up voting on the Senate's Electoral reform act 241-194.  President Mondale signs the Electoral College Overhaul Act of 1992 on May 22nd, 1992.

Wait and see what happens.

Secretary of State Kenendy starts going across the country for President Mondale and Vice President Hart.

General Colin Powell goes across the country saying "We can't afford another four years of a President who just governs with one party as we need a bipartisan President.  That's where I come in everyone."

Presidential polling:
Powell 52%
Mondale 45%
Undecided 3%

Former President Bush comes out supporting General Powell saying "This is a man who's worked with both sides of the aisle.  He's a great American."

Former President Stassen (85 years old) comes to support Powell saying "General Powell will make a great President of the United States.  We need to stop all this liberal spending as President Mondale is doing.  Let's move forward as a better nation with General Powell as President."

A few days later Vice President Gary Hart announces he won't be a candidate for re-election in 1992 as he wants to do "other things."  President Mondale decides to pick TN Senator Al Gore for Vice President.

TN Senator Al Gore

"President Mondale and I will win in November.  The Democrat's are the best party for the middle class and will look out for you in time of need." says Gore.

A week later General Colin Powell states he will choose former Secretary of State (under Bush) James Baker.

Powell says "I feel that Secretary Baker will add balance to this ticket.  He's an honest man who fights for what he believes in.  That's why I chose him to be my running mate in 92."

Onto the Conventions.  Mondale/Gore vs. Powell/Baker.

Democratic Convention, 1992: July 13th-July 16th

The Democrats renominate President Mondale.  They nominate TN Senator Al Gore for Vice President.

Vice President Gary Hart says "We need to continue the success of the Mondale administration.  President Mondale and Senator Gore will work for you and not the special interests."

Secretary Kennedy states "Democrats we must stick with Mondale/Gore and win."

Gore makes his acceptance speech on July 15th.  "America is a great country to be in.  We have so many freedom's that allow us to be such a great nation.  Let's go forward and make sure the Democrats keep the Presidency.  Thank you."

President Mondale states "I want to say that I accept with grattitude the re-nomination for President of the United States.  It's been a great past 4 years and I plan to continue for another 4.  We passed a landmark Civil Rights bill with the help of 3 (former) Republicans.  It's just a great time to be an American right now.  Thanks again Democrats."

The Democrats nominate Mondale/Gore.

Republican Convention: August 17th-August 20th

The Republicans nominate General Colin Powell for President and former Secretary of State James Baker for Vice President.

Former President Bush states "We need a Republican in the White House starting next January.  That's why we need General Powell for President.  He's the one who will win us back the White House.  Thank you."

On the third night, Secretary Baker states "I accept your nomination for Vice President.  We must win back the White House as we can't afford this liberal spending in Washington.  That's why a vote for Powell/Baker is the best for America.  Thank you and God Bless."

Finally General Powell says "Republicans, I accept your nomination for President.  It's been a hard fight but I finally got where I wanted to be at this point.  As my running mate said last night we can't afford more liberal spending in Washington the next 4 years and that's why we need Republican victory.  Let's win in November and win big."

The Republicans nominate Powell/Baker.

Over the next few weeks, Powell and Mondale campaign against eachother.  Powell calls Mondale a "liberal spender" while Mondale says "General Powell isn't going to look out for you."

Some Republicans call Powell "a RINO" because of his positions on some issues.

The first and only debate will be October 21st, 1992.

Former President Landon's daughter (Senator Kassebaum) campaigns hard for Powell while Vice President Hart campaigns hard for Mondale/Gore.
