I like the french geoelections site as much as the next person, but I've always been annoyed by the fact that the maps are incredibly small, and that they don't distinguish between >40% and >30% or less. So I decided to do something about it. I made my own set of maps for every election from 1840 to now using Dave's color scheme. I made a very simple powerpoint with all the maps on it that you can download at http://www.mediafire.com/?tzumzzzox2l.

Since there are so many individual maps, I decided to not post the individual maps (much bigger than in the powerpoint), though I will post individual maps upon request.

One note: I made all of these by hand (I have no life, apparently), so there is a small chance that a county here or there might be the wrong shade. However, the vast, vast majority of them are accurate. Also, I used the same template for every map (minus Alaska), so the old county boundaries are not reflected exactly. However, the general counties that made up the old ones are used in their stead.

Have fun. Smiley

Whoa...I wasn't expecting such positive responses. Thank you.

Btw, if anyone wants, I can make single state maps or candidate maps, too.

If you could do some maps for Virginia, that'd be awesome Smiley

Virginia is a little bit tricky with all of the independent cities, but I'll see what I can do. Any specific years?

Virginia Maps (Post Civil War)

I only made ones that Dave didn't already have. I would have gone back further, but I don't have a template for pre-Civil War Virginia. Also, if I couldn't find data for a city, I colored it the same as the surrounding county.

Bump.

Ok...I am a little biased, but I was sad to see this thread die like it did. I really wanted to post the large maps, but no one requested any in particular. I am open for requests for normal maps or single candidate maps. I can do single state maps as well, but doing it for every single year gets a little tedious.

I also plan on updating my powerpoint to include 2008 in the near future.

As a teaser, I will give you the first election before the Atlas has full maps for, 1936:

The grey county in Utah is a tie between Taft and Wilson. The ones in Texas and South Dakota have no votes, or at least no record of them. Apparently the Texas counties were in a period of early organization, not yet in their final organization, and "the records are not extant from the early period". Someone who knows more about Texas history than I should probably attempt to explain it.

Rematch of 1896 with a general die-off of Bryan's vote, especially in the West.

Generally the grey counties (other than tied counties) are ones in places that were not yet formally organized (or in an early organization) as either a state or a county. There are a couple exceptions, but for the most part that is the case, I believe.

This is amazing. Thank you. How long did it take you to do this? Must have took you at least several months, I'm guessing. Did you ever think about posting your link to your PowerPoint on Wikipedia so that someone there could make county maps of all the elections (they already made some county maps, but not for all the elections)?

I did it over summer vacation two years back.

They are using edited (colors flipped that is) versions of my maps on the 1860, 1892, 1896, 1900, 1912, 1920, 1924, 1928, 1932, and 1936 maps on Wikipedia already, as those are the only full maps I've put on Photobucket.

Maybe you should put the rest of the maps you made on Photobucket. I mean, if you have the time. You already made the maps, so putting them on Photobucket should be pretty quick.

I can put some more up. I only want to put up the maps that have the final county boundary corrections made, which I haven’t done for a number of the maps…it takes a while to do.

I can start working on it.

Final versions--with corrected boundaries, different shading for no vote counties, and striping of tied counties--completed so far (not including ones you can access on the main site):

BTW, how did you get Alaska borough data for all elections, while even Dave doesn't have it ?

Dave has all the data for every Alaska presidential election by district (as does the Alaska SoS's site), but since EDs change after every Census, he just doesn't have the shapefiles for any years other than 1992-2000.
