Hey folks...don't know if this is old news or not, but I just noticed this today. Federal polling division boundaries are finally available to us peons through GeoGratis, if you have a GIS program. They go back to 2000.

Have at it everyone!

Just for sh**ts and giggles...my home riding of Fredericton in 2008 (or at least the parts that actually matter):

Surprised there was such a strong northside-southside split in the city. The biggest Liberal area on the northside is the St. Mary's First Nation, and that large NDP poll is the area around UNB.

As expected, the Tories dominated the military town of Oromocto.

Oh wow. Did you make this map, or did you download it?

I will have to download that GIS software so I can check this out.

Otherwise, this looks great.

Unzip the folder and then open it up in MapWindow. Apparently it worked for him, but I was unable to get it open. MapWindow thought it was an shx file even though it was clearly a shp file Sad

I have the maps. Is the actual data included in this?

I don't know, but that is easily attainable from Elections Canada. So, you got it to work?

I think I actually got this to work for Edmonton-Strathcona.

Please tell me if there are any obvious issues with this map.

Grey divisions are ties.

How'd you get it to work with the results and colours? Did you manually colour it in using Elections Canada results?

I had to manually add the results and wrote a script to colour the map.

Thanks, I like where this thread is going a lot. I'm going to be away for a while, but in August I'll maybe try my hand at all this fancy GIS software (if you haven't got all 308 up here by then Tongue ).

If you've been around Edmonton at all, Strathcona is unsurprising - the area around the university feels like your typical inner city fashionable/artsy neighbourhood, and residential neighbourhoods elsewhere feel like generic Alberta suburbia. Not at all like other western NDP-Tory swing seats.

Kingsway is less clear to me, aside from the west end of the riding which is wealthy and more like the Quadra riding. I sort of assume that when it comes to East Vancouver NDP=white people, but this is mostly based on stereotype so maybe things are more complicated.

Kingsway is interesting. It would be interesting to see a 2006 map to contrast it.

As for Vancouver East, it is one of the poorest ridings in Canada. And it's not very white at all, compared to most Canadian ridings:

45.5% White, 30.5% Chinese, 5.4% First Nations, 4.9% Southeast Asian, 4.9% Filipino, 2.2% South Asian, 1.7% Latin American, 1.5% Black, 1.1% Japanese

I wish I could figure this out, but MapWindow wont recognize the files. Otherwise, I'd be making maps like I used to when I had access to the NDP's secret website which had precinct maps.
