| Election Notes:
- The statewide totals are those recorded by the Secretary of State's canvass and reported in newspapers in October 1879; for instance, the 10/20/1879 Sacramento Daily Record-Union. The state legislature canvassed different totals for Andrus (44,410) and Bramall (73). Additionally, the Assembly Journal gives those candidates' names as "Andrews" and "Barnwell", which are incorrect. The book History of Political Conventions in California, 1849-1892, by Winfield J. Davis gives the newspaper-reported totals, except for Andrus and Bramall, instead giving 42,405 and 78, respectively. The former figure probably comes from taking Andrus' figure in Lassen County to be 6 instead of 11 (see note below).
- The microfilmed records at the State Archives in Sacramento do not contain a single statewide canvass for the election of 1879. The figures are drawn from the individual county returns. For Chase, Mansfield, and Reed, the figures from those returns add up to the newspaper-reported totals, although the figures for Andrus and Bramall do not. The county figures from Andrus and Bramall add up to 42,410 (the Journal's total) and 70, respectively. There are two sets of county returns, one listing Governor and Lieutenant Governor and the other set listing all offices (though this second set does not include San Francisco County). The full return from Lassen County gives Andrus 6 votes, however the other set gives him 11 votes there.
