Special election to fill vacancy caused by death of Hiram Johnson on August 6, 1945. William Knowland was initially appointed to finish the term ending January 3, 1947, pending a special election in 1946. Knowland ran in both the special and regular elections in November 1946.
This election was entirely Write-in; no candidate names appeared on the ballot. All names receiving fewer than 500 votes were included under Scattering.
