that's one thing i've always wondered.

What would happen if you had two guys running against each other. One candidate was from New York City and had sort of a whiny Jewish accent. The other candidate was from California and pronounced his hometown as Buy-kers-fay-old.

Would people base their votes on how the person talked?

I couldn't vote for either of these candidates based on their accents. I also get annoyed with Palin's accent.

I think it helps some-George Wallace could rally up a crowd fast with his speeches. His accent helped with his base.

I actually don't remember that big an accent. I'll have to check though.

It can vary in thickness. Sometimes he sounds like the guy from All the Kings Men.
